So who replaces Amy Winehouse

I don't know. I wasn't aware that they had any plans to replace her until one of you fine people emailed me last night with news that a Coachella message board moderator stated that they were.

So what route do you think they'll choose? Something in the same female-voice based realm (Erykah Badu, Sharon Jones), someone in the uber-popular British female realm (Duffy, Estelle), or just anything that has as similar draw and can sell as many tickets as Amy Winehouse (Blink 182...shudder)?

I'm hoping that they go with the similar draw option, but do something significantly crowd pleasing. Convince Pavement to play this year.

I have no info, at the moment. If I hear anything, I'll post it.

Feist, with Broken Social Scene playing after her set on the Outdoor Theater during the Killers. And then the Chemical Brothers close the night in the tent. That would bring in some of those indie kids alienated this year.

One of my favorite performances last year was Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings. She is sex, personified. That's a great idea.

I hope GV comes to the senses and finally drops The Killers to Winehouses spot and add a true headliner. Things happen for a reason plzz GV it's right in front of ur face...

Here are my possibilities:
(not in any order)

The Decemberists
Jane's Addiction
Nine Inch Nails
The Mars Volta
Ben Folds
Kaiser Chiefs
Bloc Party
Blur (unlikely)

The Flaming Lips are playing a festival ( McDowell Music Fest ) in my home town the weekend after Coachella . It would be cool if they got Amy Winehouses spot .

Anonymous said...

Flaming Lips are also playing Rites of Spring in TN and ATP in NYC. If they announce a full tour then I would add them as a possibility. But until then they are not very likely. They would be amazing though.

Anonymous said...

Yeah I'm with the anonymous comment above. I've got a feeling it's going to be Blur.

Anonymous said...

I had said it would be a UK act.

And a reunion one at that.

Anonymous said...

So Blur then?

Anonymous said...

anonymous posting is lame.

I'd like to see the Decemberists added - the last coachella set was a good time. But id rather coachella smack us upside the head with an out of left field surprise to replace the crackwhore - Lil Wayne / Outkast / the Strokes / Interpol

I am going to go out on a limb here and predict a joint Madonna/Britney/Lily Allen/Katy Perry act as the Saturday headliner. Whereupon they launch the "Summer 'o9 Sweat and Spandex World Tour".

Other than Paul MacCartney everything we have seem before, The Cure, common hasnt been 5 years, they like tour the us for 2 year now, NOT ACTUALLY WHAT YOU EXPECTED TO CLOSE A 10TH ANIVERSARY.

Anonymous said...

hmmm...that's really random but I do remember Mick Jones saying something like "see you next year" at the end of the Carbon/Silicon set last year...and they would be a reunion from the UK...

BSS would be rad. Their website states The Langerado Festival was cancelled for March so it's plausible they would be available to play Coachella. I doubt it will happen though.

Blur (playing in France July 5th)or Interpol (currently rehearsing new songs) would add some punch to the Saturday line up. Again, plausible, but not likely.

Agreed, but Bloc Party is scheduled to play Mexico City April 17th and then Oakland CA on the 20th, so an appearance at Coachella on the 18th or 19th is more reasonable.

I am adding Katy Perry to the possibilities list.
If Coachella decides to stay with a girl for the spot I believe she is front runner. She has a big tour this year, and is playing festivals. Plus she is free during Coachella weekend.

Anonymous said...

Katy Perry is not the front runner. Go away Mark Ds.

Anonymous said...

What other girls are there to be front runners right now?

Anonymous said...

I guess Duffy is a possibility but she is going to be out of the country close to Coachella time and she is not touring North America at all.

Lets get a list of girls going, try to be reasonable here.

To start it off:
Katy Perry
Duffy

Anonymous said...

hell yeah im gonna see travi$ , why not , one of the sickest drummers out there . along with dj am , uh....again...why not

Anonymous said...

Because it's TRV$DJAM. LOL

I wouldn't be surprised to see an appearance from The Dead Weather, the new band featuring Jack White and Alison Mosshart from The Kills (who will already be there). Their existence was just announced today and their debut album will be out in June. This could be a pretty interesting add and just because Jack White's in the band they'd be a decent draw.

Anonymous said...

Shut your twat mouth about Katy Perry...she won't be ruining a festival like this no matter what!

Anonymous said...

i dont care what band he plays with, jack white should be involved in this years' coachella.

so is there not going to be any big headliner added?

Grant said...

That's what Monklish said... But let it be known: I, as well as some others that I know would agree, feel that The Killers are not on the same level as The Cure, and especially not Sir Paul. Maybe Goldenvoice just couldn't book anything better this year. Le sigh.

Anonymous said...

@ Grant

Well, JJ isn't on the same level as Prince and Roger Waters, but it happened :-/

Im not expecting The Killers to get bumped down.

sg said...

the cure already played at coachella- are they really going to close the festival this year? a bit weak for me- not on the same level as prince or roger waters either.

Anonymous said...

Portishead was bumped for Prince.... It won't happen this year, expect a James level band (oops, more Brit pop)

Anonymous said...

Can someone explain what a dj set means exactly for chem bros? Are they just going to spin their pre recorded music? Will that be in sahara?

Anonymous said...

chemical brothers dj sets are usually bout 45 mins in length, they spin everything from house to hip hop remixes and even the occasional top 40 mashup. expect this to close out the gobi or possibly sunset slot in mojave.

Anonymous said...

You're A FUCKING IDIOT.

The Chemical Brothers will be in the Sahara. Stupid fuck.

Anonymous said...

The Amy Winehouse replacement is Hall & Oates.

Grant said...

@ Anon 7:51

JJ isn't as horrible as The Killers, imo, so my argument is still valid.

Anonymous said...

@ grant

JJ may not be as bad, but style/magnitude/influential/rarity wise, he isn't anywhere near the size of Prince or Waters. Or even Portishead for that matter.

Hmmm, perhaps along the lines of Leonard Cohen, it would make sense to bring aboard Lou Reed and John Cale. That would be a surprise and definitley amazing. Plus, Antony Hegarty is already performing on Sunday, who has teamed up onstage with the above mentioned. Throw in some other innovative artists to collaborate with onstage and that would be an intelligent way to close Coachella.

Anonymous said...

^i messaged Antony's mysppace
and i got an answer back that he'll only preform with the Johnsons and not with Leonard or Hercules & love Affair.

Anonymous said...

Antony is a shy soul.

Anonymous said...

Too bad Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie can't kiss and make up and reunite Cocteau Twins (even if just for one performance) -and give the heartbroken an opportunity to see them live after they cancelled Coachella a couple years back.

Monklish said...

Unknown said...

Any possibility that U2 or Springsteen could still be added?

Anonymous said...

Above and Beyond in the Dome! It looks like I just bought a camping pass.

Anonymous said...

I have only been to coachella once, last year, and there was no dome. Is the dome in the camp ground? If no where? Does it bleed sound everywhere, it looks like it would

Anonymous said...

The dome doesn't cause any more sound distractions than does the dolab....it's all great!

Monklish said...

You don't need a camping pass to enjoy the Dome. All acts that play are playing the Camping Only shows will also play during the day. There are no camping exclusive dome artists, as far as I know.

I like this Stone Roses, rumor, though. That's a suitable Amy Winehouse replacement.

Anonymous said...

I'll be disappointed if its the Stone Roses. Not to sound xenophobic, but I don't need another UK-centric act at the top of the bill. We've already got Macca, Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand, The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, The Chemical Brothers playing while The Killers and Leonard Cohen seem like they're more popular overseas than here at times. There has got to be a decent American power act that can fill the Winehouse slot.

Anonymous said...

Holy shit, Stone Roses would be about the best possible add there is. Incredible, Monklish, please tell me this is definitely happening. I've already got my tickets, but this would just be icing on the cake.

Anonymous said...

I told you all- a big UK act and a reunion to boot.

The Stone Roses.

Anonymous said...

the stone roses could be a much bigger train wreck then amy winehouse could ever be.

I agree with teamcoachella. Why replace one trainwreck with another act that is just as likely to implode before the festival? Why risk getting burnt twice, Goldenvoice?

The Stone Roses WON'T reform for summer tour 13 years after their split

Reports that Ian Brown is to rejoin his former group The Stone Roses for a summer tour have been denied by the singer's publicist today.

It was claimed that the band would be reuniting after convincing lead singer Brown to return.

However a spokesperson for the 46-year-old said today, 'We know nothing about a reunion. Ian is working on his new studio album which is due out later this year.'

Summer tour: Manchester band The Stone Roses won't be reforming this year

A national newspaper had reported that the band were lined up to play 21 UK gigs and there was even talk of a US date, with the Coachella Festival in California a possibility.

The Mirror said the tour would coincide with the release of a remastered 20th anniversary edition of the band's debut album The Stone Roses in June.

No change of heart: Lead singer Ian Brown pictured at the Q awards two years ago

Brown, who went on to have a successful solo career after the group split in 1996, was said to have been originally unsure about reuniting with his former bandmates but the paper reported he had been persuaded by drummer Alan 'Reni' Wren, bassist Gary 'Mani' Mounfield and guitarist John Squire.

‘It's taken a lot of time and effort to get Ian to agree, but he's finally signed on the dotted line.

'The rest of the band were really up for it, especially when they realised the amount of money on the table,' a source is quoted as telling The Mirror.

However, it seems that Brown is as certain now as ever that the band won't reform. Last summer Brown told journalists that there was 'no chance ... not in the next three lifetimes' of his former band reuniting, leaving many sceptical of the alleged reunion.

The Stone Roses first album, which was released in 1989, has been voted one of the best of all time.

However the group split just seven years later after Squire, who designed the album's iconic cover, quit amid rows with Brown.

The pair are rumoured never to have spoken since.

Reni left the year before and Mani now plays bass for Primal Scream.

The Stone Roses were at the centre of the ‘Madchester’ phenomenon in the late 1980s and early 1990s when Manchester was the focus for a lot of the new musical talent hitting the UK indie music scene

Well that was fun.

Anonymous said...

They would be a terrible add.

Anonymous said...

Oh yes. A TERRIBLE ADD. The chance for a band with one of the greatest selling of all time, to be added to an otherwise lackluster day?

Yes. Horrible idea.

Thank god you're not a promoter.

Anonymous said...

Think about the day, and the music. They wouldn't fit in to open for The Killers. Plus saturday is not a lackluster day, it is full of great bands who generally support each other.

Anonymous said...

saturday is the most lackluster day in Coachella's history in my opinion. And this will be my 9th one.

Anonymous said...

what did you smoke?

Stone Roses terrible add?
Saturday is full? no lack of bands?

and i think the stone roses, are a little bit better than the killers.

Anonymous said...

The stone roses would have headlined had they reformed, saturday would have sold out in minutes. If u don't like the stone roses maybe u should spend your money on some albums of the artists who influenced todays bands instead of going to coachella.

Anonymous said...

there is a good chance that the stone roses will still reunite just not play Coachella.

Anonymous said...

Stone Roses have been debunked. At this rate, we're getting nobody to replace Amy Wino.

Anonymous said...

ahhhh , who cares anymore , i dont , Coachella 09 is already gonna be a crazy , celebration , good times weekend anyways . wootwoot , lets do this .

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Can anyone tell me if there is a certain disc of Leonard Cohen's I should get? I've never listened but feel like I should be listened up prior to Coachella! 30 days and counting!!!

Anonymous said...

@ Anon 2:00pm

LMFAO

You honestly think The Stone Roses = headliners/instant sellout? Please, when the flipping Jesus and Mary Chain reunited, even they played third to last on the main stage and the area wasn't all that packed. They're exponentially more popular and influential in the States, too. The Stone Roses only have a niche American audience. Maybe if Coachella were Glastonbury, it'd be a different story. Perhaps you should lay off the sauce Ian Brown's been hitting and check yourself back into reality.

We're lucky The Stones Roses aren't playing and we're lucky Winehouse isn't either. If there's a recurring theme here about this year's festival, it's "dodging bullets."

Anonymous said...

Daft Punk will be announced soon...

sg said...

wow daft punk will be great! are they replacing winehouse? is there going to be a surprise headliner for sunday?

Anonymous said...

if Daft Punk was added. They would be the surprise headliner AND the replacement for Winehouse. That being said. Unless, they called them to come and save Saturday after the fact. They won't get added. The MOD on the Coachella board already stated that at the beginning of the year,

Anonymous said...

The way this year has been going, I wouldn't be surprised if the Winehouse replacement was added very very late in the game. It's not like they never added Kanye two days before the festival, Beck a day before, etc.

Anonymous said...

anon 819

are you the same one claiming Daft Punk will be added?

leeartlee said...

Oh God no. Not that Daft Punk nonsense again.

@anon 8:19

I couldn't agree more. It will be one of those "Well it's about damn time" type of thing. It probably won't be epic, but at least that line will disappear (although I have formed a slight attachment to it).

Anonymous said...

@ 8:23am, no and I don't think Daft Punk will be added because of what Dani the moderator on the board said earlier this year. Even though they last played in '06, it's still too soon because they'd been playing everywhere else since.

I can't see a reunion act landing the spot (unless it's Faith No More due to Patton already being there) because the short amount of time between now and the festival would take away the awe-factor and importance of such an add. My guess is a solid indie-alternative subheadliner who is already kicking around will be put up there, someone who compliments the same Killers crowd niche like a Modest Mouse.

Anonymous said...

Can i just throw out some obvious words of wisdom. I feel like we all know this, but we're just in denial. The Daft Punk, Radiohead, David Bowie lineup cannot happen every year. It's never happened, maybe it won't (cross your fingers). With that being said, Daft Punk will not play this year....however, the side of me that's in denial (WHICH IS WRONG) says "oh they played coachella 2006 and then toured in 2007...so maybe...NO! it's not happening. It's gonna be a great year already! Wtf is going to happen with Girl Talk/Paul McCartney/Morrisey/Crystal Method/Black Keys/Beirut/Franz Conflicts??!?!!?

Anon 819 does have a point. Those were some seriously ridiculous late minute additions. When was Prince added, does anyone recall? It does feel as if there are a couple of elements missing.

Anonymous said...

anon at 1103

Point taken, but those acts aren't retired to their years...they aren't walkmen and the new acts are ipods...but you're right there are some phenomenal acts this year that are gonna blow us away.

@anon 1:00AM:

Definitely wanna go back to the early stuff. His music from the 80's-on took a more novelty turn, where his 70's output was stunning.

Go with this greatest hits:

Of course, not to be confused with:
http://www.amazon.com/Pod-Ween/dp/B000002HGQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1237400061&sr=1-1

which is stunning in a whole different way...

Anonymous said...

@11:03 & 11:04

Prince was added about a month or a little less before the festival. It probably was meant to be announced much earlier to boost ticket sales, but negotiations sidetracked it for a little longer. I truly think GV would have announced him earlier if they could and I personally think that add was an unsual case add.

That said, I don't think anyone should brace themselves for another Prince-like scale addition. I don't think they're even sweating this Winehouse replacement because Paul T's got friends in all places who would be more than happy to step up to the plate.

And yes, people need to stop living in the pipedreams and being in denial. There is a ton of amazing music out there, but year after year its the same three or four acts on the want lists. I for one think the Chemical Brothers are only playing to appease such people, and am kinda annoyed since its only a lame DJ set. Those guys have played the thing like 3 or 4 times already. Enough already!

Monklish said...

Prince was always on the lineup last year. They agreed to not announce him until it was secured that he was going to be willing to play after his hip surgery. It would have been a financial nightmare for them to announce Prince from day one and then have him drop out later. That's why they had the subheadliningg Portishead and Kraftwerk in the headliner spot when the lineup was announced.

Beck asked to be added in 2004. He played for free and for fun.

Anonymous said...

Any idea on the present incarnation of the Orb (beyond what's stated on their obsolete MySpace)?

TeamCoachellaHellYeah said...

Monklish, Could the same have been for U2? I mean what really delayed the line up this year? We heard all sorts of stories from headliners dropping out to everything being delayed because of talks with U2. Any stories with that?

Anonymous said...

I did not know that Prince story. I thought it was a miracle GV pulled out. Well that definately squashes hopes of any more exciting adds...thanks for the backstory. This year is gonna be fine.

Anonymous said...

The lineup is set. There is no Daft Punk, no U2, no Stone Roses. People need to just be happy with what they got. It is already amazing. If you don't like it, then don't go, more room for me.

Just Let It Be.

Anonymous said...

You think Daft Punk is played out AND you like Justice??

rene said...

what are the chances bloc party are amy winehouses replacement? :) they got a open date and are gonna be in the area.

Anonymous said...

I don't know the chances but I'll rally behind that idea for bloc party....Yeah! Bloc Party!

rene said...

yey!

leeartlee said...

I think with what GV did last year with Prince (what with having to wait for confirmation, blah, blah, blah) they have set people up for such high expectations. However, I don't think those expectations would be nearly as high as they were/are if it had not been for making Saturday headlined by The Killers. This combination as left a lot of people (including myself) dumbfounded.

People make the argument that "Hey, If Jack Johnson can headline, so can The Killers". Remember people, he was the Friday headliner, not Saturday. I mean, fucking Saturday is The Killers!

I've personal come to grips with this great insult to the Coachella goers.

So, moving on: Who the hell is going to replace Winehouse? I mean, this isn't even an addition, it's a replacement. So what is the frickin' hold up?

Anonymous said...

the holdup? it has been just over a week, gotta give it some time

Anonymous said...

Bloc Party is not bloody likely. Note that they're playing LA shows with a competing promoter.

Anonymous said...

NO DOUBT

leeartlee said...

anon 8:31

Yes, it has only been 10 days, but the general consensus is that GV had to know the chances of Amy making were about as likely as me hooking up with Heidi Klum. So... there must of been a contingency plan. Where is it?

Anonymous said...

hahah leeartlee you are one funny dude. She hooked up with seal though, and granted he's beautiful, but he's got that bottom of the sea coral reef on his face...i know that's fucked up, but i think it gives us hope for normal guys like you and me.

word on the street from a source within the mark williams camp is they're doing a little switcharoo between saturday and sunday's top tier by putting the yyy's on saturday as the sub with nin as the new add and taking their spot on sunday.

leeartlee said...

^^^^
That makes.... zero sense. NIN is huge, YYY's are Mid to High. Sat has lost their sub-headliner, Sunday is set. Why in the name of all that is holy would they add NIN to sunday? I mean, it's a moot point anyways as they are not going to add NIN to any day but still, your "inside" source = fail

Anonymous said...

The original plan for saturday was to have U2 perform on the main stage minus the bells and whistles of their usual massive tour setup. This will be announced within the next week...with about 20 days to go to the fest...same as they did with Prince last year. U2 wants the buzz to stay alive for their new album and they will not play any gigs in the US until late summer...this will give them a lot of press.

As for Amy replacement I have no info on that...maybe just give u2 a bit more time as they were originally only going to play a one hour set of mostly new material before the Killers go on.

leeartlee said...

Wow, you just settled it.

Did everyone hear that? U2 is going to be playing at Coachella as an opener for The Killers. Then, after that, Jesus is going to come down to earth and perform Aqualung in it's entirety playing only a tin can and the bone of a woollymammoth.

I don't understand why people make up these ridiculous stories. If you want to stir up some conversation at least think of something realistic.

U2 will not be there. Nor will Michael Jackson.

Got it?

Good.

That being said, im pretty sure Coachella is pretty much set on their final lineup. If anything is added it will be some mid to low level bands.

As for a replacement for Winehouse. I doubt there will be one. They already added Chemical Brothers, who very well could open for The Killers, if not they still have TV On The Radio who could also open for The Killers.

Why does the Coachella website say 28 days on the countdown, when it is 29?

leeartlee said...

They will replace her. If it was someone further down the lineup they might ignore it, but she was second on an already weak day.

leeartlee...

It is not U2 opening for the Killers...it is a surprise stripped down set by U2 that will take place before the Killers. That is all that it is...did Madonna open for Mylo in 2006? Did the Chili Peppers open for Tiesto in 2007?

Bono and Co want to get out and play some new tunes at a fest and keep the buzz going for the new album. Bono is also a fan of the Killers and respects their ambition and realizes that they deserve a headlining spot since U2 will not be giving a full on production.

leeartlee said...

Ok, fine then, do you have anything that would even remotely substantiate such a claim? No? I thought not.

@leeartlee:

What are you, like our mascot or something? Shouldn't we get to vote on this? How about a little restrain on that keyboard, jack.

I guess they thought it odd you didn't chime in with something what with MIA taking Amy's spot

Mark and Angela said...

Everbody using the term "fail" = fail

Mike said...

MIA would be a huge disappointment. Why would they put a repeat of last year in such a major spot?

leeartlee said...

yeah, when did "fail" come so into vogue?

Unknown said...

MIA is playing officially.

Austin said...

Hey you guys MIA is confirmed

Unknown said...

When is wavves being added?

Monklish said...

Wavves (and Robyn and whoever else was on that list) isn't being added. Someone posted using the name name as me. I've deleted the false posts and locked this down where people have to be slightly more mature to comment.

That's going to seriously limit the content on here Monklish

Is there any chance Pavement could still be convinced to play this year?

I have a hard time believing that Prince was always going to play as long as his hip was ready. If that was the case, they would have had merch that included him along with all the other acts. It would have been designed and ready to go, but they didn't.

A 10 year anniversary with the Killers headlining just doesn't sound that impressive.

MC ARQUITECTURA said...

Paul T said that pavement is not goin to happen this year.

Still hope that GV will step it up for the 10th aniversary...hopefully something new that has never play coachella, or a reunion.

popsicill said...

in an interview Paul T said he's not one to celebrate anniversaries. Like he wont go bigger just because it's ten years. He just wants to "put on a good show." So i don't think we should expect a mind blowing revolutionary thing to happen. Just an exciting Coachella like every year.

leeartlee said...

Well he definitely has missed the exciting mark for Saturday, that's for sure.

Unknown said...

it's exciting for the killers

leeartlee said...

Yes, that is who we are trying to satisfy, the bands

leartlee, theres 10 hours of music on 5 different stages before the killers even come on stage that you might be missing. i can't lie, when i first saw the killers headlining, i was bummed. i really don't care for the killers at all. i was unfamiliar with a lot of the lineup, especially saturday. i looked into a majority of the acts and now i am more excited for saturday than any other day. take a look at the acts you don't know. that doesn't mean listening to 2 songs on myspace through your shitty laptop speakers and saying, "this sucks". download a whole album, or borrow one, smoke a bowl, throw your headphones on and go for a walk. the headliners are probably the least cool thing coachella has to offer.

leeartlee said...

^^^^
I've said this before here and elsewhere; The headliners are not the only draw to Coachella, I know this. It's about the whole package.

However, the headliners are part of that alluring package. It's nice to have a day full of solid mid-card players with some unknowns surprising the hell out of you, with the grand finale of a engaging performance by an well established artists.

Is the fact that this isn't going to happen on Saturday enough to stop me having a good time? No. But does this tragic circumstance upset me? Yes.

MC ARQUITECTURA said...

HEY MONK... is it goin' to be a suprise add?

Unknown said...

Part of Pauls mission is to make bands who are up to the job and have never headlined before headliners. And the killers who are relatively small compared to macca and the cure but put on a good show and they rocked glastonbury so they obviously can handle headlining. The people who are upset just dont really like the killers. Sucks. You dont have to go see them. I didn't see JJ last year, and I turned out ok without one day of a huge headliner.

Monk!

What know ye of this alleged announcement on KCLB 93.7 Palm Springs wed morning of a big addition.

Yes we all know its April 1, but when I called the dude seemed on the level.
