holy shit monk. Orbital???!!

dont play with my heart monk. how sure are you on this? I assume pretty sure to put it on the list.

Monsters of folk are off is that another misspeont or are re not at coach?

No Gorillaz? :(

Anonymous said...

are you still sure about Pavement, Monk?

Anonymous said...

yesssssss!!! & to all the haters: Monk has been right about the line-up for atleast 2 of the years that I have gone to Coachella. SO YAY glad to get a reliable source on the line-up speculation

Anonymous said...

Just talked to Kim. Soundgarden rumor is bullshit.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monklish said...

I'd wait that one out.

Monklish said...

@Jason: Not a "no", yet.

@anon342: Probably won't be there, now.

@anon339: Sure enough to put them on the list.

Anonymous said...

Will Soundgarden be a headliner?

Monklish said...

No.

Spanish said...

Hey Monklish...have you heard anything about Delorean?

Monklish said...

Delorean will probably just play their own LA show while Miike Snow is at Coachella.

Samy said...

any idea about when the line-up announcement will be?

Anonymous said...

you dumb fack

http://blogs.seattleweekly.com/dailyweekly/2009/12/dont_blame_the_bearer_of_bad_n.php

Monklish said...

tad slow on that one. what's a fack?

Anonymous said...

instead of being cute why don't you address the article monk?? Does this mean you are wrong? are you going to take off soundgarden? are you going to keep them up and explain why you are?

Jedadiah said...

Monklish, if you could do us all a favor and organize your list the way you did last year, putting the bands that you guarantee will be there in their own list, put the bands your unsure of in their own list, etc. Just a suggestion, I'm sure you'd get a lot less comments asking how sure you are on a particular band. Anyway, thanks a lot for all of this and disregard the haters.

Anonymous said...

Little Dragon?

martin said...

THANK YOU!

Monklish said...

@anon452: Already addressed it. You skipped over it. You should feel silly, but you won't.

@Jebadiah: I'm doing it this way this year, because my last year's format (which I agree with you was much better) caused too much confusion. This is more or less my 99.999% guaranteed list from last year with a couple of the stronger "perhaps" people to spice things up.

Anonymous said...

So, we still only know 2 of the 6 headliners (3 main stage, 3 Sahara) Muse and Orbital. Thanks for the post Monklish but is there no one you can even speculate as a headliner. Give a group of 10 bands and just let people know that all they are is a generalized list of probables/possibles/hopefuls.

Anonymous said...

Hey Monk, anyone word about the rumor of Novoselic, Grohl, Smear, and Chad Channings nirvana tribute doing Coachella since Them Crooked Vultures will already be there?

Anonymous said...

is this your final post before the actual lineup. lets be honest this lineup's pretty weak. i dont expect you to know everyone thats playing, but lets just hope that coachella has some tricks up their sleeves.

J-Dizzle said...

no Dizzee Rascal?? no Thom Yorke (w/ Flea, Nigel Godrich, etc.)?? no Beastie Boys?? no Gorillaz?? would Orbital really be a headliner?!?

Anonymous said...

@ anon 344 Pavement is OUT for now...

BB said...

what does bold indicate? confirmed?

BB said...

Nevermind my question Monk I figured it out on another post...

For those that dont know Bold indicates a newly added artist..

Anonymous said...

Hey Monk I'm sure you're getting tired of this question but what about the Gorillaz? Have u not heard anything or are negotiations still going on? Or is the rumor just bullshit?

Monklish said...

@anon539: The list of ten names wouldn't surprise most people that follow the rumors.

@anon244/@anon637: I have yet to see anything credible that shows Pavement won't be there.

@anon500: I will ask. They are available, but I am sure that you have seen their availability already.

@anon622: While I doubt that Thom Yorke is playing this year, I am trying my best to stop saying the "No"s this year, because they bum people out too much. If they are not on my list, perhaps I just have not heard anything about it, yet.

@Samy: Probably Jan 18th or 25th.

@anon546: I doubt that they ever do a tribute show, but if they do, it wouldn't be at a major for-profit even like Coachella.

@anon618: I am sure that the lineup will be more impressive than my blog suggests.

@anon713: Only thing that I have heard about it is from that Gorillaz fansite, and they are not willing to discuss their sources.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for ur replys Monk. Any word on the Beastie Boys?

Monklish said...

@anon755: Scenestar seems pretty sure that they are playing. I have not received a final word on that one yet.

Anonymous said...

"@anon452: Already addressed it. You skipped over it. You should feel silly, but you won't."

"i'd wait that one out"

excellent thanks.

i was wandering if you could say more about it when the Nirvana bassist, who i'm sure has inside sources as well, is saying he looked into it and says they won't be there. I respect your insight and in all honesty I'm would bet money they would be there, it's just that you do not have to be cocky and blunt when you don't have to be, just give a couple more insightful sentences more.

hey monk, will A Place To Bury Strangers be coachella since The Big Pink is too?

Monklish said...

@anon815: I delete your post, because it made no sense to copy and paste my list.

@anon818: Probably, but I am not aware of this yet.

@anon814: Krist could be correct, but from what I know, I am not backing down until I am told it is not happening.

Anonymous said...

So are u hearing anything about the Stones?

Anonymous said...

Monk,
First--thank you for your blog.
In my opinion, if Soundgarden would reunite at Coachella...it should follow that Matt Cameron and his current band Pearl Jam would be a headliner. Do you agree? Also, what about The Who as the rock legend headliner this year?
Thanks and happy holidays.

Anonymous said...

soundgarden not a headliner??

Don't get me wrong...I think that The day I tried to live would sound incredible on the polo fields...but isn't Cameron still committed to Pearl Jam? Also, they (Pearl Jam) are going to be touring around that time as they are one of the Jazz Fest headliners. Maybe I dream too much but Soundgarden sub in to Pearl Jam would blow my mind.

any word on 311, they will be touring near coachella

I'm gonna throw this out there Monk....

Stevie Wonder?

Here are the ones Monk hasn't mentioned yet that Goldenvoice is currently in talks with:

Animal Collective
Bat For Lashes
Beastie Boys
The Big Pink
Booka Shade
Boys Noize
The Dead Weather
Echo & The Bunnyman
Fever Ray
The Flaming Lips
Gorillaz
Grizzly Bear
Jason Collett
Jay-Z
John Digweed
LCD Soundsystem
The Raveonettes
The Smashing Pumpkins
Steel Train
The Strokes
The Temper Trap
Tiesto
Vampire Weekend

"Pretty Noose" opener at sunset would make me shoot loads all over the 90s face.

Anonymous said...

what about postal service as the surprise\reuniting band? (pavement and soundgarden do absolutely nothing for me).

it's probably just a prayer but i got optimistic when i heard they're working on a new album for 2010. what better way to get some buzz going for them again then by playing coachella? it could happen, right?

M said...

If thats the case with Postal Service, then they would probably play Coachella 2011. I would love to see them also.

Anonymous said...

Need to add one more to the list above:

Arcade Fire

Anonymous said...

One more in talks:

Green Day

Anonymous said...

hahah greenday??? if they were announced as a headliner people would not just upset, there would blood shed.

Anonymous said...

@anon1158 What do you have against the word "be"?

Anonymous said...

Monklish, what do you know about some of those bigger bands that the Anon poster above mentioned as being in talks with GV?

Arcade Fire
Green Day
Beastie Boys
Echo + The Bunnymen
Fever Ray
Flaming Lips
Gorillaz
Grizzly Bear
Jay-Z
LCD
Smashing Pumpkins
Strokes
Vampire Weekend
Wilco

Anonymous said...

there is no way Fever Ray is even in talks. Karin stated that 2010 she would be working on material for the Knife and be back in the studio. Even a recent article in CoS confirms that.

Anonymous said...

Grace Jones?

Anonymous said...

Bat for Lashes and Grizzly Bear need to be there.

Monklish said...

That long anon list is pretty baseless. Some of those will probably be there, but the vast majority will not. To use the phrase "in talks", this late in the process about A Place to Burh Strangers, Digweed, etc pretty much solidifies them as a liar.

Anonymous said...

beachhouse????

Monklish said...

@anon1024: probably, but I'm not 100% on them yet.

@anon734: probably, but I'm not 100% on her yet.

@anon556: Arcade Fire (probably not), Green Day (probably not), Beastie Boys (fairly likely), Echo + The Bunnymen (not sure), Fever Ray (probably not), Flaming Lips (probably not), Gorillaz (not sure), Grizzly Bear (not sure), Jay-Z (probably not), LCD (fairly likely), Smashing Pumpkins (not sure), Strokes (not sure), Vampire Weekend (likely), Wilco (probably not)

@anon626: if you're physically holding a copy of their new album in your hand in March or April, then sure, but otherwise, expect zero chance of touring from them

@anon522: I would be all for Stevie Wonder, but I have not heard that as a possibility.

@anon136: 311 are probably due, but also charge too much for the yearly reggae/So Cal sublime-sound spot, so I would not count on it.

@anon832: They are definitely a possibility.

@anon1000: I agree.

Gorillaz ARE playing. They are headlining.

You can't confirm that??? Who are your sources, Monklish?

This is not a rumor. THIS IS HAPPENING. And this isn't from a fansite either.

Perhaps if you ask the right reps (i.e. those in the know) they will point you in the right direction, Monk.

How about The Stone Roses, Monk? I can sense you would love that as much as I would.

Can you list a top 10 for headliners?

Anonymous said...

it isn't too hard for anyone to come on here who has inside information and tell what they know. there are MANY people who have this type of info, most just decide not to share for whatever reason. the problem with coachella is that they consitently low ball artists every year, which makes way for things like the 08 disaster....compare any other domestic festival's lineup from that year and you'll see that the lackluster lineup was not due to a lack of tours. they WOULD have had a stellar lineup this year, but again, they're are more repeats than i would care to mention, and the headliners are even less deserving that those who have been deemed less that headliner worthy. get ready for a letdown. this festival is coming to an end, all points west it GV's focus.

Anonymous said...

no orbital, NO PAVEMENT, muse headlining two nights. you heard it here first.

Anonymous said...

Fri- The Strokes
Sat-Rolling Stones
Sun- Van Morrison

Anonymous said...

@Anon 314- Incorrect

Anonymous said...

@Dr. Disco- (band headliners only, no DJs)

Here is a good starting point, but I can't guarantee all options are on there.

Beastie Boys
The Flaming Lips
Gorillaz
Green Day
Jay-Z
Muse
Pavement
Pearl Jam
The Rolling Stones
The Smashing Pumpkins
Soundgarden
The Strokes

Dr. Disco said...

To Anon 3:11 and 3:13, the 2008 lineup was fantastic at Coachella! Prince, Roger Waters? If you don't like these two artists then you have no appreciation for music at all, they defined psychedelic rock and funk.

Anonymous said...

you can all go fuck yourselves

Monklish said...

@anon311: You are absolutely incorrect in about mostly every thing you have said. Goldenvoice doesn't consistently low ball artists. Performers make more at Coachella than just about any other appearance on their entire tours (including other festivals).

As for calling 2008 a debacle, compared to Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, if you discredit the repeat artists that you don't care to mention, the difference in headliners was that they had Kanye, Pearl Jam and Metallica. I would take Prince over any of those. If you are just a disappointed Radiohead fan, then measuring success of festivals is never going to be your forte.

Anonymous said...

^^^
U tell him Monk! So on ur next update are u gonna post the headliners?

Anonymous said...

yeah coachella 2008 had a terrible, train wreck of a lineup...hahaha.

Coachella 2008 had the only Prince festival performance I am aware of, Aphex Twin and Portishead's only US shows since I was maybe 11, probably the largest production of Roger Water's DSOTM tour, Fatboy Slim, The Verve's first US reunion show, Justice, MMJ, KRAFTWERK, and a great under card of Animale Collective, Battles, Holy Fuck, The Cool Kids, etc.

Anonymous said...

2008 was incredible. So many good bands, and the crowd was awesome. Possibly the best Coachella.

Anonymous said...

Yeah 2008 was probably the best Coachella. I don't know what the fuck that idiot was talking about.

Anonymous said...

oh can i confirm beach house? their tour should be announced soon

Anonymous said...

any news on other headlining Sahara artists , besides orbital if they do attend ?

Anonymous said...

Craig said...

I've gone to the last 3 coachellas and 2008 was definitely my favorite.

Anonymous said...

2008 Coachella certainly DID NOT suck. In fact, I'm worried that no Coachella will ever top 2008 for me.

2009 was a big snoozefest, aside from some obviously amazing acts.

Here's hoping for a kick ass line up in 2010!!

Thanks Monklish - keep it up :)

Anonymous said...

@Anon 6:26

All that I know of right now is:

Above And Beyond
Basement Jaxx
LCD Soundsystem
Moby
Orbital
Tiesto

Anonymous said...

YAY lets hear it for COACHELLA 08! which was my favorite Coachella too, but let's face it...I've never had a bad time at Coachella not even close. Hell i've already lay-awayed my ticket without knowing the official line-up......& as far as that one dude who said "fatboy slim played in 08 so it isn't likely they will be playing again"...uhh HELLO coachella repeats ALOT of the same artist's even back to back....Perry Farrell Anyone??

Anonymous said...

Monk, what about Massive Attack? They said they will be doing the festival circuit once they finish their Euro tour early next year.

Disconesi said...

How serious of a contender are the Strokes for one of the headlining spots? I think they would be a great opener for the Stones if GV was able to snag them.

M said...

It depends who else is headlining. Either The Strokes will be in The Killers spot in 09. Or they would open for someone bigger like Morrissey did for McCartney, or My Bloody Valentine did for The Cure in 09.

Based on who GV is talking to, it is unlikely they would get a headlining spot. Unless money became a big issue. Because I am sure they are cheaper then many of the other possible headliners.

martin said...

Roger Waters (2008) was by far the best Coachella performance... Its stupid to say that 2008 was weak.

Massive Attack/Air/Hercules and love affair for 2010!

Coachella-goer said...

Yes, Coachella has repeat acts, but not repeat Sahara headliners two years apart. We aren't talking about a last line act that is moving up and therefore has earned another spot; we're talking about a major act here. Perry isn't a major act-he's mostly a Coachella joke at this point.

Anonymous said...

shut up Coachella-goer, who hit your buzzer as know-it-all??? and there are plenty of acts repeated year to year, and it's not necessarily because they are "last line acts" that are moving up. Just saying. I'm sure that isn't news to you though seeing as how you most know every years line-up by heart.

Anonymous said...

Before everyone gets antsy and impatient about the lineup, here's a history of past lineup announcements:

2009: January 31st
2008: January 22nd
2007: January 22nd
2006: January 31st
2005: January 31st
2004: February 8th
2003: February 19th

Let history show that we could still be waiting another full month to get the facts, so there's no point in setting yourself up for impending disappointment when the names don't come out by the date you think they will.

Monklish said...

My guess for the release date is on the 25th.

Soundgarden

Gorillaz

Pavement

Massive Attack

LCD Soundsystem

Daft Punk

Orbital

I hope it's true. Monklish, return! I crave info!

Gorillaz would headline over the beastie boys or Muse in my opinion, and there is no way Daft would play the Sahara again, they would be main stage.

Anonymous said...

Your opinion is fucking retarded.

M said...

Daft Punk would def be main stage and Beastie boys would absolutely headline over Gorillaz.

So if Daft Punk is gonna be there I bet the days would look something like this:

Fri: Muse, Orbital
Sat: Beastie Boys, LCD Soundsystem
Sun: Daft Punk, maybe a pretty big band like gorillaz open for DP.

Anonymous said...

Daft Punk seem to have been pretty clear that they aren't doing shows in 2010. But a boy can still hope...

Gorillaz?

No big updates yet. I have just a few smaller bands that do not need a full update. By next week, I hope to have another good update.

@anon447 Do not expect the Arcade Fire to play.

@anon922 Do not expect Massive Attack to play. Not sure on Gorillaz

Pearl Jam and Soundgarden and Smashing Pumpkins would be a total 90's overload!

@anon728 The Rolling Stones should not be counted out just because they have not announced tour dates for 2010 'at the moment'.

Not headlining:
Daft Punk
Beastie Boys
Arcade Fire
Green Day

The Flaming Lips!

I wonder what's up with Massive Attack.

Monklish said...

I did not say that Massive Attack will not be at Coachella. I just do not expect them to be there. I can easily be wrong.

However, Arcade Fire and Daft Punk definitely will not be at Coachella.

@anon951 hmm

Anonymous said...

That would be shocking if the Beastie Boys were there and DIDN'T headline.

Anonymous said...

BBoys can sub headline . i dont care , as long as they are there . who could they open for though that would be a good transition ? any ideas ?

Anonymous said...

actually that wouldn't be so shocking. The BB's aren't as big as they used to be. Plus, Coachella is a much different festival then it was in 2003. They could always "co-headline".

martin said...

Paul T, said last year that they dont have that many options of headliners or subheadliners..

If the beastie boys are saying that they want to play in coachella, i dont see why Paul T doesnt make that happen...

and Massive Attack with their new album and tour coming to the US and Mexico... dont see how can they just pass on them

Anonymous said...

I would not be surprised to see Beasties and Gorillaz co-headlining. If Massive Attack isn't there, it's because they delayed their original tour plans and will instead be at other festivals later in the year.

J-Dizzle said...

yeah, the obvious transition of co-headliners for one of the nights that makes the most sense is Beastie Boys and Gorillaz, with the Gorillaz getting the superior later set time. I've seen both live multiple times and as far as the overall spectacle of entertainment, and by that I basically mean production value, the Gorillaz can do a lot more. trust me.

as of right now, I can see Beasties & Gorillaz co-headlining the first night, Muse the 2nd night, & Soundgarden the last night. never was the biggest Soundgarden fan, but those headliners ain't too shabby in my opinion.

Anonymous said...

^^
I can definitely see Gorrilaz and BBoys Co Headlining a night. I'm sure once Bboys release there album they'll be everywhere on tour. I'm not to sure about Gorillaz. This would prly would a lot of ppls time to see them live. So I could understand if GV was to does this.

J-Dizzle said...

lots of y'all seem to be very cautious about the Gorillaz for some reason. not sure if you're just not into their music or whatever...but don't fool yourselves, people...the Gorillaz are SICK and can hold a headlining set time down just fine at a place like Coachella. Damon Albarn is a pro's pro & they will turn that main stage area into a full-on dance party! not to mention they use a lot of guest stars & musicians on various tracks, which is always awesome for festivals. we should all be stoked at the possibility of them headlining a night...even at the Beasties expense!

Anonymous said...

i agree , i would be happy if both were there the same night , makes since to me , these 2 on the polo fields would be a party indeed !!!
