2011

Looks like Goldenvoice took all of the complaints about their 2010 late announcements to heart this year.

I do not imagine that it is time to start digging for bands, but who do you expect to be there?

this will be a fun post for you all to revisit later this year

arcade fire [foregone conclusion]
velvet underground [surprise is out]
beastie boys [first show back]

daft punk [what everyone wanting, but they want to do a djset]
the strokes [unless their new album's recording sessions break them up]
the cars [probably not happening, but I can only hope]
at the drivein [this is happening]
death cab for cutie [new album]
national [no proof, just seems likely]
broken social scene [no proof, just seems likely]
empire of the sun [why else would paul watch their el rey shows?]
gary numan [volcano rebooking]
surfer blood [said that he's playing]
deerhunter [seems likely that they'll get bumped up]

holzman said...

here's some more

the knife [signed on for another silent shout show]
orchestral manoeuvres in the dark [spin interview]

arcade fire should have decent visual elements for their spring tour

Anonymous said...

UNKLE as well

holzman said...

it's friday

big boi [no outkast]
the avalanches ["party" dj set planned for their return tour]
armin van buuren [hopefully stuck in the middle of the day as trance sucks]

specifics have velvet underground as the sunday headliner with the end of their set likely overlapping empire of the sun to close the festival. daft punk will be on the main stage after beastie boys.

Anonymous said...

Holzman your head is way up your ass but thanks for trying.
Velvet Underground...
Big Boi would probably command large sums of money and lets be honest he's not worth it.

Anonymous said...

The Velvet Underground would be horrible Sunday headliner. Lou Reed was horrible at Lollapalooza 09.
Big Boi won't cost that much to book. He played Pitchfork fest.

Anonymous said...

Velvet Underground? Even though Sterling Morrison died? Come on.

holzman said...

i'm not saying who i want to play. just who is.

Anonymous said...

Don't see why Deerhunter would get bumped up. Their crowd was one of the few non-clusterfucks on Sunday.

Anonymous said...

@ holzman:

Man, are you serious? It's that laid out this early? I kind of want to believe they were/are/already have negotiated with VU, but John Cale said recently that they literally had no plans to ever play together again.

Craig said...

I'll be surprised if Kings of Leon aren't there headlining probably Saturday. To me they are the obvious choice to follow the recent trends of bands like Muse, the Killers, Jack Johnson.

Popular band that will be an unpopular choice on blogs like this, but will sell tickets.

Anonymous said...

Kings of Leon will not be headlining at Coachella 2011 unless every other headliner on the planet decides to say no and dies.

sahara headliner:
Faithless, Swedish House Mafia, Underworld

in talks:Feist, Sufjan Stevens, The National, OMD, Fleet Foxes, Gary Numan, Band of Horses, Pulp, Surfer Blood, Pet Shop Boys, The Knife, Broken Bells, Tribe Called Quest

I call bullshit
If Pulp is playing Coachella they will be a subheadliner

Anonymous said...

Each day has two subs, but it is bullshit, anyway.

Besides, the new generation of vapid coachellian cares more about the same major label "indie" crossovers that play every fest and electro than about greats from the past reuniting.

semi reliant source who works for Goldenvoice sent me this lil tidbit...seeing as how it's barely October i could see the skepticism about the legitamity of this but here is some food for thought for those trying to form what Coachella 2011 might look like

not so shortlist of artists in preliminary talks with Goldenvoice about being there next spring:

Cut Copy, Godspeed You! Black Emperor,Best Coast,Nas,Panda Bear, The Morning Benders,Bon Iver,Gary Numan,Scissor Sisters,Queens of the Stoneage,Brand Nubian,Wavves, Empire of the Sun,Cold Cave,Hercules and Love Affair, Janelle Monae,Tame Impala,The Cribs,The Strokes, A Tribe Called Quest,Interpol,Robyn,The Cribs,Big Boi,Dinosaur JR. The National,Cee Lo,Always Sunny in Philadelphia LIVE,Sufjan Stevens,Russian Circles, The Cars,Phosphorescent,Mondo Cane,Mumford n Sons,Washed Out,Cold Cave,Broken Social Scene, Surfer Blood, The Sea & Cake, Nosaj Thing,Jenny and Johnny, OMD,Feist,Warpaint, Kid Cudi,Zach Galafinakis, Belle and Sebastian, Klaxons,Built to Spill, Caribou, Neon Indian, Two Door Cinema Club,Phantogram, Fleet Foxes

DANCE ACTS BEING CONSIDERED:
Swedish House Mafia, Afrojack, Herve,Underworld,Fake Blood,Green Velvet, Skream, Boys Noize, Royskopp, Tiga,Sebastian, Justice,Leftfield, Carl Cox, Faithless, Calvin Harris, John Digweed, Fake Blood, The Twelves, Annie Mac,Moderat

absolutely NOT happening despite being rumored or heavily wished for:
Radiohead, David Bowie, Oingo Boingo, Blondie, A Perfect Circle, Roger Waters, REM, Pulp, Stone Roses,Outkast,Rolling Stones,Boards of Canada, Neil Young, The Who, Bruce Springsteen, U2, Portishead, Blur

rare acts/reunions GV is shooting for:
The Knife, Roxy Music,Guided by Voices, Elvis Costello, PJ Harvey,Postal Service, Avalanches, Replacements, Walkmen, Pet Shop Boys, Annie Lennox

probable headliners:
Arcade Fire, Beastie Boys, Tool, Coldplay, Daft Punk, Pearl Jam, Kanye West, Lady Gaga

now for those of you who say that Kanye West n Lady Gaga aren't headliner material have to realize that the demographic has evolved since Coachella was born in 1999case in point popular contemporary acts headlining all three nights last year and huge amount of celebs being sighted....this isn't your grassroots indie festival finding its legs anymore...

that in mind seeing all the heavy chatter about Arcade Fire and Beastie Boys possibly headlining i'll give Monk the benefit of the doubt and hope that Daft Punk and/or Pearl Jam headline the other night (i liked the idea of Daft Punk closing out the main stage after Beasties)

i also think the velvet underground will be added late in the game once all the rumors have died down

Phantogram already said they haven't been invited. Lady Gaga is playing in Florida on the 15th and 16th, and if she headlined Sunday, that would have her doing five shows in five nights on different coasts. Famous acts rarely do three shows in three nights, so five is ludicrous.

Anonymous said...

How are The Walkmen a rare-reunion act?
List is most likely bullshit
Though that lineup would be fantastic.

Anonymous said...

Lou Reed solo is more likely than Velvent Underground reunion....yuck either way, you realize how old the band members are? they'd have their caregivers on the side of the stage in case they soil their adult diapers....same applies for the
Rolling Stones....just yuck

Daft Punk and Arcade Fire are so obvious that it's not even funny. As for the Velvet Underground....you can't be serious? No way in hell they would reunite for a bunch young, drugged out dumbasses like ourselves....they're way too artistic for that. Beastie Boys and Tool also seem likely. No Outkast, no Radiohead, so stop wishing.

Anonymous said...

I sooooo hope GV bring The Knife to the polo fields!!!

I dunno why people don't want arcade fire at coachella!! I saw them at lollapalooza and they put on a GREAT show.

Anonymous said...

Arcade Fire will be there but as a subheadliner.

Daft Punk DJ Set to close the Main one of the nights.

Beastie Boys
Coldplay
Kanye West
these are your headliners

Anonymous said...

^I would bet the headliners will be like that...at least, at this juncture it makes the most sense. There are a lot of big albums coming out in 2011, so let's stay tuned.

Anonymous said...

GV plzzz don't bring that piece of crap Kanye to the polo fields

Anonymous said...

^Way too much hip hop for Coachella.

Arcade Fire has reached Headliner status, it is there time, they will open things up Friday night.

I think saturday Beastie boys followed by Daft Punk makes a lot of sense.

Sunday, that is up for debate. I think Kanye is a real option but only if Beastie boys aren't there, but I think they will be. Id love to see Radiohead close the festivities, but Im guessing someone more like Tool, or the RHCP.

Reasons Arcade Fire will not headline:
1.)Lack of main stream notoriety, key word being "mainstream."

so let compare to prior contemporary acts that initially were doubted to be worthy of headliner status shall we

-Muse with its connection to the 'Twilight' saga which we all know is huge, they performed at the VMAS, they have a huge following overseas which has slowly built up to the mammoths they are today.
-Jack Johnson, questionable for Coachella standard demographic but solid album sales to be a worthy enough headliner.
-The Killers, good album sales, hit singles, on MTV regular rotation.
-Gorillaz, huge second album with transcending appeal with various famous cameos, highly anticipated follow up along with far and few performances.
-Jay Z, arguably one of the best mainstream rappers ever, huge current album, solid hits list.

now ask yourself, is Arcade Fire really up to par to these headliners and the draw they have aside from the indie/hipster crowd?

that is why Portishead was obviously bumped, did anyone in their right mind think their name alone would draw hoards enough for Coachella to sell out? i think not.

2.) Festivals are always trying to outdo each other
I doubt GV would use last years Lollapalooza sloppy seconds headliner as their top tier act

3.)Element of surprise, of course we know they'll be there and of course GV knows we know, but stay tuned for tricks up GV's sleeves...

4.)'The Suburbs' has sold roughly about 350,000 units. Sure it debuted at number 1 but has been falling steadily...remember Modest Mouse and their hit record? yeah, but who cares?

and Red Hot Chili Peppers nor Tool will be there, I say Coldplay or Radiohead have a more likely shot at being there considering their last appearance at Coachella

Phosphorescent confirmed for Stagecoach...it's highly likely they'll participate at both fests.

Don't listen to em Monk (I know you won't). Wait til you have definitive stuff and then post. We can wait :) You've developed a tremendous amount of street cred in my circle. Your accuracy percentage is scary good.

That being said....
Arcade Fire, Beastie Boys, Daft Punk, Soundgarden, A Perfect Circle, Interpol, and Menomena FTW!!!

Soundgarden will not be there.

LOL @ Soundgarden. No more 90's grunge tombstones.

Soundgarden flopped at Lolla...why would the promoters want them to do the same at Coachella?

Anonymous said...

Goldenvoice would not have any other fests sloppy seconds...

Soundarden will not be there

Arcade Fire subheadliner
