please bring the felice brothers to the polo fields, they're long overdue - and that lineup above is probably fairly accurate. Sven Vath wouldn't be that low though. I bet there will be a couple more surprises than that too...but I would go to that.

@anon 9:08

1. Aphex Twin, Pulp, Gogol Bordello, PJ Harvey, How to Destroy Angels, etc would not be billed that low. It's too stacked of a lineup.
2. Portishead's Geoff Barrow already said they are not playing Coachella. Their US tour is in September-October
3. Pulp's first show will not be until Primavera. If ATP NY can get the financial support, Pulp will be headlining that.
4. R.E.M., Marina & the Diamonds, Mr. Oizo, Ladytron, The Avalanches, Asobi Seksu, Of Montreal will not be playing

Anonymous said...

@midnight, how do you know your source saying no to daft is better than monk's source?

Anonymous said...

I know for a fact that Daft is very unlikely and this is probably more reliable of a source than anyone has on this board so don't get your hopes up. Trust me, I was absurdly disappointed to hear about it. A good indication of what the electronic line up might look like is Ultra's. Just a guess but I could see Deadmau5 doing the main stage this year.

Anonymous said...

Deadmau5 playing two years in a row would be so lame. And I like how you "know for a fact" its "unlikely".

Anonymous said...

@6:13 I'm sure this is untrue, but even if it is true, how long do you think it takes an artist to get from New York to California? All that would mean is they weren't playing Saturday.

guys the thing is, this festival isn't going to be as stacked as you think. when fuckers like monklish come on here and spill the beans about bands that are negotiating, it puts the thought of "DAFT?!?! ROLLING STONES?!?!?!" into everyone's heads, so when the slightly less amazing, much more realistic lineup comes out, everyone is disappointed, and then the hostility and GV bashing begins.
so......all the "righteous" folks that come on here and say "Why make monklish a victim? Why the hostility?....well....its because sites like these are the ones that generate it.

here's to a lineup that I hope to God in no way shape or form resembles the 08 disaster.

I loved 2008

Friday:
Jens Lekman - Cut Copy - Vampire Weekend - Dan Le Sac - The National - Swell Season - Sharon Jones - Fatboy Slim

Saturday:
Minus the Bear - Man Man - MGMT - Cold War Kids - Hot Chip - Death Cab - Rilo Kiley - Animal Collective - Mark Ronson - Yelle - Calvin Harris - Prince

Sunday:
Grande Ole Party - I'm From Barcelona - Shout Out Louds - Stars - Booka Shade - My Morning Jacket - Modeselektor - Simian Mobile Disco - Chromeo - Justice

My expectations were low going in and I honestly enjoyed almost every set I saw

Anonymous said...

I've only been the last 3 years so maybe I'm biased, with 2008 being my first year but:
Friday - The Verve, are you serious they were fucking awesome other than the stank from the shitters that came across that night.
Saturday- Prince was epic, I saw 3 or 4 people CRYING during his performance.
Sunday - Roger Waters, best concert I have ever seen. He had a plane fly over and dump confetti for gods sake. And arguably the best album of all time played in its entirety.
Not to mention, other notables that weekend, Chromeo, Calvin Harris, Justice, Raconteurs (Jack White Slayed it), Portishead, Kraftwerk, The National's Friday sundown set on Outdoor Stage was the 2nd best set I've seen on that stage other than Yorke.
I would say 08=10>>09.
But its Coachella, so its ridiculous no matter what!

2008 was a mind blowing. Kraftwerk, Portishead, Prince. Closing out with Roger Waters was beyond spectacular.

you can't logically argue that the killers are a shitty headliner.

they were a "get" that particular year. Bonnaroo didn't have them, and neither did many other American festivals. If you start comparing Coachella with EVERY American festival, then you're putting the festival you love at a disadvantage; for all intensive purposes, let's say Bonnaroo is THE east coast festival of this country, and Coachella is the other way around, the representation of the west.

Bonnaroo really is getting shittier and shittier every year. That's not to say that Coachella has had a flawless history of lineups ( 08 was very weak, even with Portishead and Prince as headliners, the lineup was obviously hard to sell). Bonnaroo on the other hand has many of the same bands play twice, sometimes three times in a row, consecutively, year after year.

Unfortunately, the other titan of American festivals is Lollapalooza. To throw Lollapalooza into the comparison equation is what screws everything up because every year they deliver a lineup that is completely stacked, and often one-ups both Coachella and Bonnaroo lineups combined (I have never been to a festival that has Lady Gaga and Greenday as headliners, and I don't plan on ever attending one), but the fact of the matter is, Lollalpalooza is smarter with it's money, perhaps only because they have more money.

I have no doubt in my Coachella will have it's year, like it proves to do every year, in some form or another, be it headliners, solid undercard, or a pairing of the two.

All of that being said, I do personally feel that they have yet to top some of their past lineups, when Lollapalooza consistently continues to attain both diversity in lineup names, leading to more diversified crowds, age groups, demographics, credit card holders, what have you, in a more 'successful' fashion.

This is because Coachella refuses to sell out and book a Lady Gaga, or a Katy Perry; which is why they've begun to book a Veteran act every year; essentially they are going the opposite route of Lollapalooza, which is going after the 12-15 age range.

Coachella is like a red wine mixed with a white, with tempered, sought after, nostalgic results, and Lollalooza is like dipping Cheezits in ranch with a side of herbal tea and a purple napkin; so different and diversified, but focused more on 'different', that it attracts more people meaning more $.

Lollapalooza usually does have better headliners, but keep in mind you can only see half of them. Lady Gaga played at the same time as the Strokes and Arcade Fire played at the same time as Soundgarden at different ends of the park. I like how Coachella organizes the schedule to not overlap most major bands. That being said...Lady Gaga, Strokes, Arcade Fire, Soundgarden, Green Day, Phoenix > Gorillaz, Jay Z, Muse, Faith No More, Pavement, LCD Soundsystem.

Anonymous said...

@ anon 11:15

precisely. coachella's headliners no longer match Lollapalooza, in both quantity, or quality. GV jumped the gun and did the All Points West festival because they probably knew Lolla was going to do a Chile festival.

Bottom line is Lolla usually has a better lineup, Coachella has a better atmosphere/setting.

Anonymous said...

monk i know you are not perfect but you keep the rumors organized and i appreciate that. although with all the idiots on here saying things like roger waters was a horrible headliner lolla is better because lady gaga and green day, and with all the assholes cursing you and talking about your vagina, i totally understand why you will not be doing this next year.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't say Lolla has a better lineup. Lolla would never have bands like The Specials, PiL, Echo & the Bunnymen, Throbbing Gristle, Aphex Twin, Faithless, Jarvis Cocker, Happy Mondays, Jens Lekman, Fever Ray or any of those acts that really make Coachella great. They may have bigger headliners but they will never have the taste that Coachella has. However, they don't have beer gardens so that is a plus for Lolla.

Unknown said...

Lolla maaaaaybe has better line-ups.

Coachella has the hottest, sexiest, hippest girls.

Plus, Coachella has WAY better after parties.

And of course of the vibe is second to NONE!

Anonymous said...

ok sure, but Lolla is smarter, Perry Farrell is smarter. When can you remember the last time Lolla had to rearrange their lineup MULTIPLE times (ala Coachella in 2008) in order to make it "sell". That was the absolute lowest point in Coachella lineup history. I believe they've made up since then (My Bloody Valentine, Pavement, Throbbing Gristle, Thom Yorke, rare acts, etc.) but the point is they've yet to top their best lineup, headliner wise (04 had Radiohead, Pixies, Cure, Kraftwerk, and Air).

When a festival's best set of headliners was SEVEN years ago, it means the festival is becoming weaker, which it is, because Lolla consistently has better headliners. I know everyone likes to make the argument that you don't even have to watch the headliners but let's face it, if the headliners are horrible, it takes away from the experience of the festival.

Anonymous said...

the Coachella headliners are becoming weaker because GV isn't smart with their money, or perhaps they're just very greedy.

it doesn't make sense to me to try and negotiate a 4 or 5 million dollar deal with a band from decades ago like the Rolling Stones, or Paul Mccartney, just for the sake of bringing in the older demographic since they're the ones who have jobs. How can you say that's a "boutique" festival, and Lolla is the sellout? Seems to me that GV is losing the battle.

Anonymous said...

this year's lineup is going to be WEEeeeAk

Anonymous said...

When Damon Albarn signed Gorillaz last year, he more than likely signed Blur to be a headliner for '11. It would only make sense that they would headline seeing what acts have been headlining in recent years.

would make sense for:

Arcade Fire
Blur
Kanye West

Anonymous said...

DAFT PUNK WILL NOT BE THERE

Anonymous said...

good god look at Lolla's '08 lineup and then compare is to any of the past 3 Coach lineups.

then tell me how this festival isn't dying.

Anonymous said...

Lollapalooza might pull some epic big names (Radiohead, NIN, Rage in the same year) and maybe one or two undercard acts that should have been at Coachella instead (Lou Reed, Bat for Lashes, Broken Social Scene with all the ladies) but Coachella is more of a festival for serious music fans. Lollapalooza will never book a Thom Yorke side project, Fever Ray, Throbbing Gristle, My Bloody Valentine, Bauhaus, Jarvis Cocker, The Good the Bad and the Queen, Aphex Twin, Portishead, Kraftwerk...

Anonymous said...

You all are fucking nuts, lineup is always better at Coachella. Lady gaga, green day, are fuckin garbage. Te vibe their sucks, tons of drunk assholes. The girls are way hotter at Coachella, the bands are way more hip, rare and performances are all much more intimate. Weather is better, venue is better, there's camping. If u like lollaborapalooza better you have no musical taste, like ugly girls, prefer alcohol and being a jackass better than drugs and mind expansion. Plus you must have no like for electronica or sense of adventure.

Anonymous said...

yeah and Jay Z isn't like Lady Gaga of Green Day at all.......pft

Anonymous said...

I have been to both fests and they are both great. Coachella has a better overall lineup every year though.

Anonymous said...

Bonnaroo's atmosphere > Coachella's. Late night sets, 4 days of all genres of music and no teen ravers and hipsters surrounding me. Coachella is much more visually appealing though and the campground party is sick now that they have DJs, but Bonnaroo's music is going til sunrise in a few tents.

Having been to bonnaroo and coachella both 4 times I have to admit that you can not compare the atmosphere of the two, bonnaroo is that much better, That being said Coachella 2007 may be the best festival for the music alone that I have ever attended. Bonnaroo 2006 is neck and neck....

I ran into Warren G today at a restaurant. He said even he doesn't know when Detox is going to be released. But he did say that Kanye is headlining Sunday night and Daft Punk will perform Stronger with him.

Warren G was pulling your leg because he's actually Monklish and enjoys fucking with people

You can't really be saying Lolla has a better lineup right? That cannot possibly be serious. They had Lady Gaga. I mean, come on, that's just dumb. Green Day? HAHAHA, they'd be lucky to be a sub at Coachella.

As for 'roo, bands like Kings of Leon and DMB are boring and not artistic enough for Coachella. We don't like jam bands. Plus the humidity at roo is too much.

Why all the hate for the older bands? I don't want to see the Stones but McCartny and Waters were both awesome. Yeah, it's REALLL lame to have some of the most important people in music history playing their classic albums live for us. How lame. Bad job GV!! I don't want to see a Beatle play for 3 hours at my festival!

Don't let the hippie scum rile ya!

If you love mud, stifling humidity, and smelly hippies, bonnaroo is AWESOME!

If you love music, it sucks balls.
