If u say Gorillaz will be there I believe u Monk! Thanks 4 all the info

Anonymous said...

Gorillaz!!! Nice!!Are they headliner #2 or a sub?

CHUCHO said...

Hey monk!

Regarding Gorillaz, are they headlining? Or just sub?

What about Soundgarden? Headliners?

Pleaaaaaase tell us more about the headliners.

And thanks for the update!!!

Anonymous said...

I hope Soundgarden isn't headlining. Barf.

Anonymous said...

Are any of the bands listed headliners? A yes or no will suffice.

Anonymous said...

Broken Bells will be there; somebody posted it on the boards

Anonymous said...

So Orbital well headline sahara one night, who are the other 2? We are also looking for one more main stage headliner after a Muse Friday and Gorillaz saturday. Who's shutting it down? I'm betting they got the Stones.

martin said...

nice... thanx monk!

Anonymous said...

Seriously Monklish, great job and no need to guarantee anything but what are your leans on headliners -any of your intuition would be much appreciated. Are any of Muse, Soundgarden and Gorillaz going to headline in your opinion? What are the Sahara headliners beyond orbital? LCD perhaps? Maybe Gorillaz as a Sahara headliner?

Anonymous said...

^^
If Gorillaz play they'll definitely be on the Main Stage. I gotta believe that they got the Stones to close out Sun 2

Anonymous said...

You better not be wrong about Gorillaz.

l u k e said...

wow

Anonymous said...

Monklish,

why did you fail to include A Place To Bury Strangers if they've practically been confirmed already? Your exclusion of them makes me suspicious of how reliable you are, although I'll keep the faith.

Sam said...

Why would No Age play two years in a row?

Anonymous said...

lots of bands play coachella two years in a row

Anonymous said...

yeah, sam.

Anonymous said...

Massive Attack --> Gorillaz --> U2

It's happening.

Anonymous said...

Hi Monk,

Do you think that Elvis Costello will be on the lineup poster? Also, She and Him = awesome!

Anonymous said...

@ Sam

Of all the acts to repeat this year, No Age makes the most sense. 1) They're from LA and put on a great show and 2) The EP they released in 2009 was incredibly good. They're probably going to release a new album this year, maybe even in time for Coachella and if it's anything like their EP, No Age will reach new heights of popularity.

Anonymous said...

@Monk, Can you check your source about PAVEMENT again, Monk. There's people on the Coachella Msg board that says they've spoken w their management, suggesting they are not going to play because of a placement disagreement. I guess they are lookin for headliner money. Is there any truth to this?

Sam said...

Ah, I thought they had something against repeat acts. I guess I was wrong.

Here is the only hint I am going to give you. You know 2 of the headliners. They have already been talked about in one of the threads in the past few weeks. The third headliner has not been "officially rumored" because GV is keeping them under wraps. Be surprised and enjoy. They are a good one.

DEPECHE MODE

Hell NO !
BOWIE
BOWIE
BOWIE

nothing against Depeche Mode , but this year 2010 , is the year that all our wishes come true , i hope !!!

Anonymous said...

WHY NOT HAVE DM OPEN UP BOWIE

Anonymous said...

^^ ha , now that would be awesome , but my guess is that it will be Faith No More

Anonymous said...

RADIOHEAD only show of 2010

would be nice too , but not happening at Coachella 2010

Anonymous said...

Thom Yorke will probably be there , just dont know with who ???

So we know 2 of the 3 main stage headliners, we haven't heard any rumors of the other, which tells me its someone that is worth keeping quiet, like Paul last year, Prince the year before. So in lieu of that I think there are 5 candidates.

Rolling Stones
Radiohead
The Who
RHCP
Bowie

3 of those 5 would fill the classic performer spot that GV has been trying to incorporate the last few years. The other 2 don't have any plans to tour in 2010 and landing them would be a big deal. Its gonna be a beautiful Coachella!!

Anonymous said...

^
you read my mind .

my guess is between Stones or Bowie
either would be EPIC Coachella 2010

Anonymous said...

There's no way RHCP would headline again so soon.

The Who
The Stones
Red Hot chili peppers.

How about

Talking Heads
REM
Pearl Jam or
Neil Young

Hey Monk, Anon here. I'm gonna go ahead and say that based on the touring schedule, Citizen Cope isn't likely. What say you?

Check it out.

No Vitalic, he'll be in France that weekend.

Rolling Stones are a rumored Headliner...
Yes...
Rolling Stones

Anonymous said...

i want to know why they never represent old school hip hop from the 90s properly. sure, there is the occcasional Black Star or Public Enemy, but there is so much they could do more!!!!!!! Like Digital Underground in the tent would be sick. Or Dre and Eminem on mainstage. TRIBE would be sick as FUCK. Has KRS one ever done it?? I just get tired of the Lupes and Kanyes and all that bullshit. bring the old school to Chella...

Anonymous said...

@Anon 7:49

Yes, at least two more big hip hop acts. In talks with a few. We will see how it goes.

Looks like the hiatus has taken a haitus. I'd say they are a lock for 2010

no Beach House? new album coming out this year.

no Arcade Fire? new album this year, not to mention a Coachella favorite.

no New Pornographers? new album this year and played Coachella before, maybe even twice before.

the xx is a great guess, i hope.

Panda Bear... i hope you are right, that would be a huge!

Gorillaz, seems very possible. I am hopeful, if any concert could hold a Gorillaz show, full choir and all, its Coachella, if they got Gorillaz, they would for sure be a headliner.

Anonymous said...

The xx have been confirmed for a while now. Article in Spin magazine.

Monk, I think you should take Vitalic out of the list ..(sigh)..

A Place To Bury Strangers have just been removed from the COS confirmed list, apparently they were never given an offer to play.

Anonymous said...

HAHAHA! Even better logic now!

Monklish said...

@anon859 Perry is always there. I did not even bother looking into it. If I am wrong, I can live with knowing that I was wrong about the most assumed act each year.

@anon932 Headlining. I think they are on Sunday.

@anon1158 If Gorillaz are not there, I will stop blogging.

@anon1249 Someone told me that they were playing, but I did not look into it, because I did not know who Empire of the Sun were and forgot about it. I will say "maybe" just to be safe.

@anon245 Nice vagueness. I can confirm that they are in talks with major hip hop acts, major indie acts, probably an alt country act, some dance acts, too. Try harder when you talk out of your ass.

@anon1103 Have not heard anything about Broken Bells.

I will remove Vitalic and Citizen Cope in the next update. Can not get them all.

Stop doubting that Pavement will be there.

Anonymous said...

Monk, are all the headliners in your list?

Monklish said...

@anon353 2 out of 3. Muse and Gorillaz are. No clue on the last one, yet, but there is a lot of 'who it is not' types eliminated.

J-Dizzle said...

Monk...have you heard anything at all about Thom Yorke's side band possibly playing Coachella as a sub-headliner??

Anonymous said...

So GV must be keeping that 3rd headliner under wraps at all cost. Gotta be either Stones, Bowie, Radiohead. What would be ur guess right now Monk?

Anonymous said...

Monk, why do you get upset when other people who have information just as good as yours say it? I know this is your blog, but it is public and anyone from GV or somewhere else can post things. So don't be so bitter. Let everyone talk.

A lot of people use this blog because they can post as anonymous, unlike the Coachella forum on the website. So this is a place they can share their information without worring about anything.

Please have some respect. You have very creditable info and you are often one of the first to share it, but don't get upset if someone does first.

Anonymous said...

@anon 4:38

It could be, but also think outside the box.

Anonymous said...

4:48....please elaborate....what do u mean by outside the box? A comedian? a college football band? something acapella like Boyz II Men?

Dr. Disco said...

Other outside the box headliners I can think of, becomming highly unlikely at the bottom:

Talking Heads
Outkast
Strokes (but are they big enough??)
Arcade Fire
Dr. Dre
Phish
Daft Punk

Unknown said...

Thanks Monk!

Do you anticipate this phantom 3rd headliner to be a surprise to most?

Anonymous said...

Monk - love the blog...

Question: Do you have a hunch who the third headliner is? Any idea?

Anonymous said...

Monk, thank you for answering.

Just so we know, what are some 3rd headliner possibilities that have definitely been eliminated?

Anonymous said...

How about a list of significant acts that are definitely NOT playing?

Monklish said...

@anon440 I usually only get mad at the people who post fake information. If people post stuff that is confirmed or confirmable by me, I will let it stand on its own while I look into it, or I will agree with them.

Anonymous said...

@anon 4:58

I meant think outside the standard acts that Coachella goers want every year.

Anonymous said...

@ Dr. Disco

I could see Daft and Outkast performing. I don't have any evidence but they would sell a lot of tickets.

M said...

I think 3rd headliner will be a huge hip-hop act. It makes sense. Thats who Beastie Boys would open for or co-headline with. My guesses are:

Dr. Dre
Jay-Z
Timbaland

-all of them will be touring in 2010

m said...

Add Outkast to above ^^^

Anonymous said...

^ headlining , the last kept BIG secret , no way ! its gotta be bigger than that . i would love to see outkast , but not a headliner by far !

Anonymous said...

BBoys should open for the Gorillaz .
As far as the best kept secret , my gut feeling goes with the Stones or Bowie , sorry for all you haters , but major headlining bands is where its at !

Anonymous said...

as far as all else goes , im looking foward to BASSNECTAR , so im not all about the headliners ! there will be soooo much music to be excited about , EXPLORE you mind people

Outkast would, without a doubt, be a headliner. 50 million albums sold and haven't performed in many years.

Jay Z b4 Outkast any day.

Right, because Jay-Z never tours. Asshole.

Outkast would be amazing.

Nobody knows if Jay-Z is going to be the 3rd headliner.

Everyone is throwing out guesses.

Anonymous said...

Monk -

Do you have any clues as to who the 3rd headliner is?

Anonymous said...

ITS JAY Z

Anonymous said...

Jay-Z is playing a huge arena in Los Angeles 3 weeks before Coachella. It's probably not him.

Anonymous said...

wow, you people are dense. It's not Jay-Z - he just headlined APW and he's playing a huge show in LA soon before.

I can see the logical ones being:
1. Rolling Stones
2. Pearl Jam (with Soundgarden subbing, although maybe not on the same day - pj plays 3 hour sets, and im pretty sure Matt would be too tired to go 4 hours).
3. Outkast - new album supposedly coming out
4. Arcade Fire - only coachella could pull this off
5. Daft Punk
6. The long shots (if they're going for a Prince/Rage type surprise:
a. Bowie
b. Talking Heads Reunion
c. Smiths Reunion

Anonymous said...

also, I pray it's not the Beastie Boys. They stopped being relevant decades ago.

martin said...

if gorrillaz is closing on sunday, and muse will be on saturday, the more logic thing is to continue the great impact that Paul McCartney had last year on a friday, and since you have muse and gorrillaz to draw young crowd, they will probably go for another rock n roll legend.

My guess is The Who or rolling stones, love it to be David Bowie or the smiths, but people should give that up

Anonymous said...

It's Jay Z. I don't get it either, but it is.

Anonymous said...

GV knows their audience...and The Who is not what their audience would want.

Anonymous said...

I just read on the Huffington Post that Jay-Z told Ryan Seacrest in an interview that he's headlining Coachella.

Anonymous said...

Link it, you bastard.

Trig said...

I think the reunion act (NOT the headliner) will be....PULP

M said...

These are the reasons why I believe Jay-Z will be there:

-He has no problem being in LA
-He is a huge hip-hop act, would be great and spice Coachella up a little bit
-There is all this talk of Beastie Boys being there but not headlining, if that is the case then Jay-Z would be a perfect candadate for them to open for.
-Jay-Z loves indie music, check out this link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHpf6cGFmLo

-Grizzly Bear is one of the many artist that will be there. (look at link above)
-Jay-Z is looking to get into the indie festival scene.

I'm sure I left some other good points out. I could definitely be wrong. But there is alot of good evidence pointing in that direction, and we don't seem to know the 3rd headliner yet.

you people are clueless...

Euro and State festivals have already announced Pavement, the Strokes, U2.....list goes on.

Coachella hasn't because they don't HAVE to. No promotion for a guaranteed sellout. Early layaway option guarantees ticket for true fan.

R.V.s allowed and first year you can leave and come back. They know capacity will be capped.

CHUCHO said...

Yeah... Glasto needs promotion so it sells out....

Monk why don't u shine some light on these arguments.

Harry said...

Coachella has never sold out 3-day passes I believe, or at least not before April. It would have to be Led Zeppelin, or Rolling Stones plus The Smiths to stop a Coachella diehard from getting tickets before they sell out. And in that case I'd deserve what's coming.

Anonymous said...

smiths thing is true.

Anonymous said...

Coachella 3 day passes sold out in 2007.

There is no way The Smiths will be at Coachella. I am not denying that they are reunited for a tour. But if you really think Morrissey is coming back to Coachella after the crap performance of 2009 coachella, your out of your mind.

Anonymous said...

Keep Lady Gaga out of my fucking tent.

Sam said...

Lady Gaga is not going to fly to Japan, come back for one show at Coachella, and then fly back to Japan.

Monklish said...

@Sam exactly. Ignoring that she would be jet lagged, she could not perform on Sunday night at Coachella and in Japan on the same date. Also, when people make irrational assumptions that an act would fly from Japan to Coachella and back to Japan, they seem to forget that she has managers, road crew, dancers, staff, touring assistants... Her people would never agree to that, and the cost to charter her and her crew a flight would push her normal booking fees closer to what they would be paying a real headlining act.

That said, I would enjoy seeing GaGa in the Sahara, but there is nto a chance that she will be there this year.

Monklish said...

As for Jay-Z, yes, I have heard that Jay-Z is the third headliner, but I have heard it the same was that you all have. Rumors. Blog comments. I am not 100% sold on his appearance. I will not be surprised if he is on the poster as the headliner, but for now, I can not confirm that he is it, because I simply do not know more than you on this one.

The Smiths are not playing. Come on...

Monklish said...

Also, the Eagles? Come on...

Anonymous said...

So you're saying the headliners could very well be Gorillaz, Muse, and Jay-Z? Blah

Monklish said...

@adam I hope you are telling the truth. Glassjaw would be amazing!

@anon1246 I am not sure that you could get Kim and Frank to hang out off the stage long enough to type that.

@anon1227 See the clever thing you did there was to change the Jay part of Jay-Z to Gay. Insanity!

Monklish said...

@anon1057 I am saying that the headliners are definitely Muse and Gorillaz with someone else or Jay-Z as the third name. Do you think that Jay-Z alone makes that a blah lineup? Or does your blahness come from the lack of some other headliner?

Anonymous said...

Any chance of The National?

Anonymous said...

Monklish, thank you for responding to these comments.

Who are some acts that definitely won't be the 3rd headliner?

Monklish said...

Beastie Boys, Pearl Jam, Pavement, Radiohead, The Talking Heads, Prince, U2, The Smiths, The Eagles, Red Hot Chili Peppers

Monklish said...

@anon1109 Sure. They are playing that festival in Tennessee in March so they could be interested.

Besides the Beastie Boys that you have debunked... the list looks pretty fucking good.

The Strokes?
Basement Jaxx???
Deftones???

Any input regarding these artists?

Monk, any chances for the 3rd headliner being....

R.E.M.?
Velvet Underground?
Kanye?
Madonna? (I'm sure this will get a few laughs)
Foo Fighters? (TCV doesn't rule them out)

Madonna is funny, but at the same time, I admit, I'd love it.

"Madonna? (I'm sure this will get a few laughs)"

I saw her when she played in '06. There were a lot of snarky remarks and put-downs beforehand, but half of Coachella was trying to cram themselves into the Sahara during her set. The perimeter of the tent was overflowing by about a 20 to 30 foot thick crowd climbing over eachother to get in. B*tch knows how to put on a show!

yeah, but the bitch also came on 30 minutes late (which is a BIG no-no in the festival world where time slots need to stay tight & accurate to ensure every band gets their set in) and then she played only 5 freakin' songs. LAME!

I'm still blindly holding out for Oingo Boingo

oingo boingo are finished when it comes to shows. The lead singer has severe ear damage.

Monklish, what do you know about Goldfrapp?

Interesting news about Beastie Boys and Pearl Jam not headlining. Thank god no chili peppers. So this means no Temple of the Dog dream sets, and if the Beasties play we basically get a ridiculous 1-2 punch.

What about Sade?

the list posted @2:13 is false because Elvis Costello and Bat for Lashes will not be there, sadly

White Stripes / Jay-Z / Wilco / Vampire Weekend

Muse / Beastie Boys / LCD Soundsystem / Spoon

Gorillaz / Soundgarden / Pavement / Phoenix

Seriously...it's going to be some combination of that. Mark this moment - 2:26PM 1/13, lineup called
