January

Here is my latest list. Some of my latest confirmed names will seem familiar to my Coachella message board readers. Feel free to trust or not trust me that I have not been borrowing your efforts to send artists as confirmations. I've always admitted into perusing the board upon occasion and attempting to fact check everyone's posted rumors for my confirmed list. There's a lot of good information on there (it's where I found out about the Pixies/Radiohead in 2004, after all, when someone scanned and posted a picture from a UK magazine), but there's also a lot of bad information (every year since people have been trying to logically prove why Radiohead is headlining again).

I have also included further explanation of my groupings to clarify.

My personal guarantee (i.e. I has sufficient knowledge that I trust these will occur, that is, I've been told that these have been making arrangements to attend the festival as contractually paid acts or clear evidence exists on the internet to confirm their attendance as a paid act):

A Place to Bury Strangers
Animal Collective
Armin Van Buuren
Bajofondo
Band of Horses
The Black Keys
The Bug
Buraka Som Sistema
Chairlift
The Chemical Brothers
Crystal Castles
Deerhunter
Drop the Lime
Evil Nine
Fleet Foxes
Franz Ferdinand
Girl Talk
Glasvegas
Gui Boratto
Hercules and Love Affair
The Hold Steady
Instituto Mexicano Del Sonido
The Killers
Kings of Leon
Kode9
Late of the Pier
Los Campesinos
Lupe Fiasco
Lykke Li
Morrissey
Mr Oizo
N.A.S.A
Neil Young
No Age
Noah and the Whale
O'Death
Peanut Butter Wolf
Primal Scream
Public Enemy
Roni Size
Sebastian Tellier
The Airborne Toxic Event
The Bloody Beetroots
The Gaslight Anthem
The Original Wailers featuring Junior Marvin, Wya Lindo & Al Anderson
The Presets
Themselves
Tinariwen
The Ting Tings
TV on the Radio
White Lies

Probably (I have faith based on certain knowledge that these should occur, that is, there have been discussions between the bands/agents and the organizers and both parties tend to agree on terms but I don't have sufficient evidence due to various reasons to believe this to be 100% true):

Alabama 3
Basement Jaxx
Beck
Blur

Boards of Canada
Boris
Built to Spill
Comedians of Comedy
Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele
Dirty Projectors
Friendly Fires
Flying Lotus
Gang Gang Dance
Grace Potter & The Nocturnals
Jamie T
Jay Reatard
Jenny Lewis
Leonard Cohen
Kimya Dawson / The Moldy Peaches / Antsy Pants (one of those)
The Knux
Lily Allen
Mastodon
My Bloody Valentine
Paul Oakenfold
Steel Pulse
The Heavy
The Mountain Goats
The Prodigy
The Specials
The White Stripes

Wilco

No factual basis other than I've heard it's possible (My faith is wavering based on various factors that these might occur, that is, these names have been thrown around by the organizers and people that I know which aren't associated with organizing the festival and/or they seem relatively unlikely to occur to me on a personal level):

Eminem
Far
Freebass
Future Sound of London
Jedi Mind Tricks
Mogwai
Paul McCartney
Radiohead
Royksopp
Social Distortion
The Sword
The Vaselines
TRVSDJAM
Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Won't be there:
David Byrne/Talking Heads (bah/clearly)
Depeche Mode
Jarvis Cocker (apologies to the uber fans that asked about this 20 times in my comments section)
Oasis
Pulp
R.E.M.
Simian Mobile Disco
The Smiths
Ladytron
The Faint
Fischerspooner

Reunion rumors:
The Avalanches
Big Audio Dynamite
Operation Ivy
Pavement
Roxy Music
Screaming Trees
The Kinks
The Replacements

BOARDS OF CANADA

Anonymous said...

Boreds of Canada lawl, amirite?

Thanks for all the updates.

Anonymous said...

really? just comon!

Anonymous said...

Royksopp is listed twice.

Monklish said...

@anon932: thanks. it was stored in my clipboard while I was copying and pasting from emails.

Anonymous said...

You don't claim Boards of Canada and then not provide some proof. Expand on this.

Anonymous said...

yeah please share some details

Anonymous said...

yeah boards of canada is quite the stretch. as are white stripes. care to elborate?

Anonymous said...

If your source for Killers in the Sahara is my post on the Coachella board, it was made to be a joke.

- PierogiHead

Anonymous said...

seriously? Boards of Canada?

Anonymous said...

hello friends,

you are all overlooking the big ONE from the town of the hurdled ford...

Anonymous said...

Hurdled ford is Dublin...U2?

Monklish said...

@PierogiHead: Killers source wasn't from your post. The idea was floating around. Doesn't make a ton of sense to me because they aren't really that dancey.

@anon706: seriously? I thought that "no U2" goes without saying.

Also, please stop acting like anything below my "guaranteed" list are confirmations. I may elevate some to confirmations soon, I may remove some soon (see Future Sounds of London).

Also, in the future, ignore all Coachella posters that are leaked until mid-January. The poster is usually formed the night before or the day of the lineup announcement. Prior to then, the names are kept in an Excel document on what I think was GV's accounting server. As far as I know, this is the only complete list out there, and it's used to keep track of costs and other financial bits. They don't email this list around, though there are some shorter emails discussing singular band offers, so when developing your fake story regarding your miraculous hacking or finding of a lineup poster, please take into account these things.

Anonymous said...

led zeppelin will be there. very, very late add.

Thanks for the blog I love it and it's better than the Coachella boards. I'm curious about two Bands Doves and Wilco. How probable are either?

I can also guarantee amy winehouse, radiohead and coldplay with Paul McCartney as a strong contender. this comes from an owner of clearchannel.

I am 100% certain Blur is not playing Coachella. Monklish your sources are wrong.

What about Muse?

Still waiting for your source/reason behind listing Boards of Canada...

Monklish said...

Changed things up. It was getting to too lengthy to scroll through, so only the main post will be on the front now. Instead of making new posts, I'll just update the main post.

@anon who said "Still waiting for your source/reason behind listing Boards of Canada..."

I'm not sure what you want me to do. I have nothing to copy and paste here, nor can I provide you a link to what I've been told. If they're not they're, then I'm wrong. I'm not putting all my eggs in the basket of a group that hasn't performed in ages.

Monklish said...

Also, people keep asking me who the headliners are. I've stated that I only know that The Killers are headlining a night. I also know that Blur are playing (no clue if they're headlining) and Neil Young is playing (no clue if he's headlining).

Based on who's left from the possible pool of headliners, feel free to imagine it's one or two of the following (people who I haven't been able to eliminate):

Coldplay
Jane's Addiction
NIN

So realistically, depending on whether or not Neil Young and/or Blur are Headlining, your options are:

3 of the following:
The Killers
Blur
Neil Young
Coldplay
Jane's Addiction
NIN
David Bowie

As I've said already, the first three are signed on. Depending on how much money they end up spending on the upper-tier, they might not go with Bowie or Coldplay on top of the Young/Killers/Blur price tag.

Coldplay and NIN seem mutually exclusive due to both headlining 2005 together.

If you want my guess based on all this, I'd say that the headliners will be:

Friday: Neil Young
Saturday: The Killers
Sunday: Janes Addiction / Blur

Best case scenario would be:

Friday: The Killers
Saturday: Neil Young
Sunday: David Bowie

Anonymous said...

Just noticed again, Gang Gang Dance is listed twice.

Anonymous said...

Interesting headliner comment. What's the 411 on Jarvis Cocker (solo), Broken Social Scene, M83?

Anonymous said...

BLUR IS NOT PLAYING COACHELLA!!! IT'S NOT HAPPENING!!! YOUR SOURCES ARE WRONG!!!

Anonymous said...

Timeout Monklish, you don't say Boards of Canada has a chance of being there (isn't this said every year?) and then say you have nothing to say about it. I understand you don't have a link or anything to confirm this "rumor" you've heard....but exactly what have you heard? That GV offered them a slot? Did the band ever get back to them? C'mon now...

Radiohead>All of these bands and this blog.

Monklish said...

I'm pretty sure that Radiohead would disagree with you.

This isn't worth a new post, but I'm getting tired of perusing the Coachella board. My once a month glances have become a daily ritual, so I've decided to stop lurking there until the lineup comes out. After, I might pop on and say hello.

For the record, to help things out, from what I can tell/know of your lineup leakers:

insidetheface = not always full of shit, but not fully accurate.

nationocean = completely full of shit with a tinge of that douche merry prankster syndrome that I discussed earlier.

scooper49er = relatively legitimate source of information

ulcer = a joke, right? green day is doing their own non-Coachella tour in May/June.

I'm sure there's others, but that's what I found on the first page of your Rumors sections.

Anonymous said...

So NationOcean gave us Basement Jaxx and Scooper gave us The Smiths? That doesn't go along with what you're saying.

Anonymous said...

So when u know the official headliners Monklish you'll post them here?

Bon Iver?

Monklish said...

No clue about Bon Iver. Should be easy enough to find out, though. I'll look into it.

That's another fake lineup, anon322. Here's some of the glaring errors:

The Killers aren't headlining on it.
It's missing Public Enemy.

Erykah Badu is having a baby soon, so she won't tour this year.

Katy Perry...

Bob Dylan...

Lil Wayne...

Anonymous said...

Hey Monklish do you know anything about Mogwai, Sigur Ros, or Fuck Buttons?

Anonymous said...

U never answered the question of when the lineup would be announced monklish... Should we expect something next week or just wait till the 19th? Have u heard anything on the subject?

Anonymous said...

Monklish, do I have to keep asking....whats the info you have on BoC? Why do you have them listed? Spill it...

Anonymous said...

Any info on SPoon or Ryan Adams? What about the Doves?> thanks@!

Anonymous said...

So best case scenarion we get

Killers/White Stripes
Nine Inch Nails
Morrissey

Worst case we get

Killers
Neil Young
Jane's Addiction

Anonymous said...

Even though I like Morrissey more, no way in hell he's a more fitting headliner than Neil Young.

Anonymous said...

Morrissey would draw a bigger crowd and him and Marr (if Modest Mouse is there) its possible that they play together. That would be the closest thing we ever get to a Smiths reunion. And Morrissey would do it for cheaper.

Anonymous said...

lineup should be announced around 10AM on January 19th. KROQ should start promoting this by Wednesday/Thursday of next week.

Anonymous said...

i ran into tom waits at a filling station in tiburon tonight and he said that he will be playing on saturday night right before morrissey

I'm a super fan? I guess, but I wouldn't put myself above most of the other Coachella crazies.

Hall and Oates is a trap street. Glad to see that my dumb joke from an old BrooklynVegan comment made AZ Central.

I'll do a new post before the 19th.

Anonymous said...

So if Hall & Oates are a trap street, why are they still listed as personally guaranteed? Any word on when goldenvoice stops keeping everyone in the dark and releases some actual INFORMATION?

Monklish said...

My only post in that thread was "Yes, All Points West will return."

Anonymous said...

Monklish, why haven't you mentioned Paul Weller at all? Any info on him? High Road shows that he is available to headline in April on West Coast which makes Coachella seem likely.

Anonymous said...

Hey Monklish quick question.. when the lineup is revealed do u think the majority of us will be happy or do u see an initial backlash like last year?

Monklish said...

Who is Paul Weller?

Anonymous said...

@anon 3:35pm, If The Killers end up being on top of the poster you can expect another shitstorm.

Monklish said...

@anon335

Last year's backlash was caused because people were expecting Led Zeppelin, Daft Punk, Radiohead, The Smiths, etc and then were given Jack Johnson and Roger Waters. Ignoring the fact that Portishead was begged for by fans since Coachella's early years, some wrote Coachella off. Then Prince happened, and some people came back.

This year will be different. A lot of people still have stupid expectations (i.e. U2, Radiohead, The Smiths...) and they're be sadly disappointed. Those that have it in their minds already that they'll see The Killers as a headliner or Morrissey (sans The Smiths/Marr) as a headliner or Neil Young as a headliner, won't really be let down.

If you like the dance tent, you'll love the lineup.

If you are expecting less globally appealing niche artists in the dance tent, you'll probably be disappointed.

If you only go for the headliners and are expecting to justify the whole expense based on one name, most of you will be disappointed.

If you think that that the previous undercards made the festival worthwhile, then you'll be extra pleased this year.

Everyone has different tastes. I think that the Killers blow. A lot of the internet agrees with me. They have more fans, though, that will show up to Coachella, than the internet has people that will actually take the time to complain that they're headlining.

Anonymous said...

@Monklish - I've gone to every Coachella since 2001 and out of all those years I've only caught maybe 3 or 4 FULL headlining sets. That's where the brilliance lays in Coachella, most of the best stuff happens in the smaller tents especially when the headliners go on. I have conceded that this year will bring the Killers(how they became so popular, I'll never know) but I put my faith in that the undercard will be stellar as usual.

What also seperates Coachella from other festivals is the amazingly talented and fun electronica acts they book. And you saying that the dance is going to be good this year makes me reassured that at least I'll have somewhere to go when Brandon Flowers and co. are putting on their cheesy and uninspired snoozefest on the Main Stage, I just hope they don't bring over lots of frat douches like many other KROQ artists tend to do.

Anonymous said...

re: Paul Weller?

Are you joking? If not, he was the leader of The Jam and the Style Council and he's had a very successful solo career. Granted, he's a lot bigger in the UK than he is in the US but he would he'd probably play an early evening set on the outdoor theater is my guess.

Monklish said...

Does he play The Jam songs or is mostly new solo stuff?

Anonymous said...

Monklish, answer the BoC questions that have been asked....what have you heard exactly?

Monklish said...

re: boards of canada, if you'd like me to recreate the dull conversation from memory, it went something like this:

me: find anything out?
source: reads list of names that includes boards of canada.
me: thanks, you're the best.

In other news, I added Chairlift to the confirmed list. Thrilling, I know.

Anonymous said...

Tribe Called Quest?

Anonymous said...

Monklish -

Glad to hear that the Sahara tent is looking well this year.

Anymore updates on The Prodigy? I know most recent comment was "pretty likely".

Monklish said...

Probably no Tribe. The general consensus was that they didn't really enjoy being back together for their Rock the Bells shows. The big get hip-hop act is Public Enemy.

I've heard lots of positive things that suggests that The Prodigy will be there. I've heard the Chem Bros will be there, and I'm not sure if they want to repeat the 2005 dance tent headliners.

Anonymous said...

Word is Faith No More is headlining. Care to comment?

Anonymous said...

Rodrigo and Gabriella?

Anonymous said...

well, they were both billed in 2005. and they repeated a dance tent headliner (if you want to call Justice the headliner in 07) from 07 to 08. But that's not quite a legit argument maybe.

I wouldnt be surprised to see both The Chems and Prodigy billed on a festival lineup together.

Anonymous said...

Well I really hope both the Chems and the Prodigy are there.

Maybe Basement Jaxx too? or is it to much to ask?

what about one day as a lion?

Anonymous said...

@Monklish re: Weller

He mostly plays solo stuff but plays 2-3 Jam songs in a headlining set. Almost always closes with Town Called Malice. Also plays That's Entertainment and Eton Rifles on a regular basis. He had a really well received album come out in 2007:

http://www.metacritic.com/music/artists/wellerpaul/22dreams

Like I said above, he's still bigger in the UK, regularly selling out the O2 Arena and the like.

Anonymous said...

@Monklish - It seems a lot of blogs this morning are talking about a possible Pavement reunion happening at Coachella. Spiral Stairs has told a magazine that Coachella "keeps talking" to their agent, who seems to be waiting for "the right number" Do you know if there is any truth to this?

Monklish said...

NME is using a smaller British tabloid as a source. Pavement will play again, and it might be this year, but that article meant nothing, more or less.

Anonymous said...

Hey Monk - any word on Armin Van Buuren playing this year? Also is there hope for Orbital sighting or maybe even an Orb?

Monklish said...

Armin Van Buuren = yes
The Orbital = no, but I could be wrong
The Orb = no clue

Monklish said...

Also, I removed Hall and Oates finally. Someone sent me a link to a few MySpace people that were really excited about Hall and Oates, so now I feel bad.

Dear Monklish,

thanks for all the info you have given us throughout these insane days. The question that is roaming everyones minds is:

Do you know when the line up will be announced?

Any clue at all?

Anonymous said...

I can already see the responses to this comment containing a bit fat "who?!?" ... keep hearing rumors of James (the band) and their fans are dying to know, willing to fly across the pond for that!

Anonymous said...

Do you have any info on... One Day as a Lion, The Nightwatchmen, She & Him?

Anonymous said...

Basement Jaxx will be there. Just look on their myspace page.

Anonymous said...

Plzz give us some info on the announcement...

Monklish said...

I don't know if James are playing, but I've seen their names floating around just as much as you have. They toured the US briefly last year, and I believe Goldenvoice put on those shows, so there's likely some pre-existing connections. They're definitely not a "big fat 'who?'", though.

However...from what I understand The Specials will be Europe only this year.

Are you going to update this list soon? Only a few more days from what I hear!

Monklish said...

The lineup will be out on Jan 26th, at the earliest, but I'd personally bet on February 2nd.

Anonymous said...

isn't Bonnaroo announcing on feb 2nd? I doubt they want to do it on the same day, they'll want all the media attention they can get. And damn, it'd suck if they make us wait till early February to announce the lineup. The 26th seems late enough as it is.

I'm still hoping for the 19th, but am ready to wait longer.

Unknown said...

So it will be two less weeks of ticket sales?

Anonymous said...

@ Monklish, Back towards the end of 2008 you'd said you would know at least 2 of the 3 headliners within a couple weeks...Do you know by now? Or are we still headliner-less?

Anonymous said...

I second the question from the previous comment. I'm personally inclined to keeping the headliners a secret till the announcement, just because I like the surprise, but I'm really curious. I am one of your many believers so it would just be cool to know that someone on the "outside" so to speak has this information at the present. You don't actually have to say who... just tell us if you know or you don't know, it will get me very excited if that's the case.

Anonymous said...

Also, as I've been saying for the past month, and apparently this is consistently being ignored, Gang Gang Dance is listed twice. You should tell us if they are "personally guaranteed" or if they are just "probably." I'm a pretty big fan so I'd like to know the chances of getting them... either way, thanks for looking into them and coming back with good news!

Anonymous said...

I really hope it doesn't come out later than the 19th! This week has been too long already! I ask Monklish I don't think the majority of us can wait that long.. Plzz give us the headliners if u know

To drew:

Bands can repeat 2 years in a row at coachella. Hot Chip, Gogol Bordello, and Justice all played at both the 07 fest and 08 fest. Just throwing that out there.

But if the 2nd part of what you say is true, then damn. I was hoping to see them.

drewdive said...

And, while we're on the subject of "personal guarantees", it's really not that difficult to throw up a list with a 75% hit rate if you do the April gig math and throw in interview slips (i.e. Drop the Lime, Airborne Toxic Event, etc).

But, all of us (including myself) get caught up in this speculation shit because Coachella is just so rad. Hey GV, will ya please put up the damn lineup already!

drewdive said...

To anonymous - fair enough. I was just repeating what my buddy told me. Hmmm...maybe he's throwing me a smoke screen.

No seriously, I know they're not playing. If you're local, I recommend catching their upcoming LA gigs. AC's current set is totally amazing (they killed at APW)!

Sounds like some Little Bird lied....Also hearing some rumblings now about the Replacements reuniting now for Coachella, Is there any truth to this, Monklish or is it still just a rumor?

Whoever said artists never play 2 years in a row at coachella is a fucking moron.

(Edited erroneous stuff out)
Alisha ("Monklish") - Your list is wrong. Animal Collective is not playing this year. How do I know? I am a friend of a bandmember in AC and on Thursday confirmed with him that they are NOT playing after showing him your "personal guaranteed" list.

So, please take AC off your lists...they are not playing Coachella 2009...to mine and many others dismay, I'm sure.
