Weak headliners (besides Gorillaz) but overall a good lineup; I really hope they can find a classic headliner to replace Muse or Jay-Z.

Anonymous said...

I got 99 problems but this ain't one. Thanks Monk

Anonymous said...

@Monk - Are you 100 percent sure about that... wink wink

Anonymous said...

Jay - Z is wrong...keep diggin

Anonymous said...

very weak hedliners except for Muse...

Unknown said...

fuck classic headliners!

Except Neil Young

Sam said...

Exactly. I want Neil Young.

Anonymous said...

Wow. Best lineup ever for Coachella if that's true, and I've been to all 10 of them. Thom Yorke is going to rule.

Sam said...

and I didn't mean to say replace, I meant headline over...

Anonymous said...

Even if this is correct, there are about 50 more to add. However, the headliners seem lacking and little of the Coachella headliners that make you surprised. I already ordered my tickets, and these headliners will make other stage choices easy.

Monklish said...

@anon657 and @anon700 It is Jay-Z

Anonymous said...

@Monk - You've been thrown a bone..

Dr. Disco said...

Well it maybe Jay-Z for now, but lets hope for a Prince like addition, please!

devobrain said...

Jay -Z hasn't even sold out the Staples Center for his late March show in LA... Why would they book a headliner is gonna be in LA a few weeks before the event while not even selling out his own arena venue? Even if he does sell it out, thats already 20,000 people who have already potentially saw him coming to Coachella..key word here POTENTIALLY

Anonymous said...

@7:16
Well spill the beans then. Otherwise just go back to the Coachella board and bitch.

Anonymous said...

Why Jay-Z????? It just seems so lazy a choice, especially since he was at APW last year.

Anonymous said...

Monk can you explain how you also guaranteed NEIL YOUNG last year?

Anonymous said...

Fri,april 16th
MAINSTAGE:
MGMT>SOUNDGARDEN>MUSE

SAHARA:
BASSNECTAR>ORBITAL

Sat,April 17th
MAINSTAGE:
FAITH NO MORE>BEASTIE BOYS>JAY-Z

SAHARA:
SOULWAX>DEADMAU5

Sun,April 18th
MAINSTAGE:
THE STROKES>PAVEMENT>GORILLAZ

SAHARA:
LCD SOUNDSYSTEM>BASEMENT JAXX

so this is what each day looks like according to the confirmations and final lineup pending to be released on tuesday given that GV adds some big names ala Prince in '08

Anonymous said...

Might be the first time I'll watch all three headliners.

I like Sam's comment @6:50, weak headliners besides Gorillaz. I'll bet every one of these will be called "weak" by different people. They're not weak just because they've made quality music this decade. Maybe Muse and Jay-Z are touring everywhere, but that doesn't mean everyone's seen them. Satisfied.

Crombrenner said...

Look at it this way people. By getting the headliners they got, we are able to have SOOO many amazing undercard acts. There has never been a Coachella this strong from top to bottom. Soundgarden, Pavement, Faith No More, Beastie Boys, TCV, and Thom Yorke? Are you kidding me? That is unbelieveably fantastic.

Anonymous said...

Crombrennar - You do realize the lineup hasn't been announced yet and that Monklish's list is at best 60% accurate...right?

Crombrenner said...

Yes I do my friend. However, I'm willing to bet that Monk is surprisingly accurate with this lineup. Guess we'll have to wait and see. BTW last year she was like 85% accurate on her final post. Not 60%

Haveagreatday said...

More than 60% accurate according to last year.

Sam said...

If we end up getting Public Image Ltd., Soundgarden and Pavement that would definitely make up for Muse and Jay-Z.

Anonymous said...

U had to believe that one day a huge rap act would headline one year. Might as well be Jay Z. Just be happy it isn't 50 cent. Then u could have a reason to bitch at GV but otherwise Beastie Boys leading into Hova is a good pick.

Sam said...

Thom Yorke too

Sam said...

Yeah as far as mainstream rap goes I'm happy it's Jay-Z.

Dr. Disco said...

How sure are you of Jay-Z? Is this a defunct headlining spot? It sounds to me like this is just the strongest rumor of the last week, because there was no evidence of it then it just jumped up.

Monklish said...

@anon722 Sure. He agreed to play. Things fell apart and they did not get a contract signed. I believe he was going to open for Paul McCartney, but he definitely was not the absent headliner replaced by The Cure that people have assumed.

Anonymous said...

Don't get me wrong, I hope her list is completely accurate. But I do remember on her final list last year before the lineup dropped she had Neil Young as definite and Paul McCartney as not likely. So just don't go getting too excited yet.

Monklish said...

Jay-Z and The Beastie Boys make for a solid headliner. They are not 'co-headlining', but if you imagine it that way, the last 3 hours on the main stage on their day should have a very large crowd.

Monklish said...

@anon737 The Strokes? I do not think so.

Anonymous said...

@Monk - Answer the question then Monk, why would GV book a headlining act who couldn't even sell out his own arena in LA 3 weeks before Coachella?

Assuming he does sell out the Staples Center, how will this show be different?

Anonymous said...

Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Jay Z has lots of friends.

Anonymous said...

Hi Monk. Would Flea likely to be playing with Thom Yorke?

Anonymous said...

In response to all the posts listing them, I hope Soulwax is really there and plays during a headliner or subheadliner I don't care about.

Anonymous said...

@ANON 824 - You mean he's gonna hold back guests in an LA Show? Yeah..that makes sense.

Anonymous said...

Muse is clearly the weakest headliner out of the three.

Anonymous said...

Yeah those headlines have FAIL all written over it, with exception to the Gorillaz..very MEH..The rest of the bill better be stacked or Sat night again is gonna be a short one again...

Anonymous said...

anon 828. yes.

Anonymous said...

What happened to jj?

Anonymous said...

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE ;)

Anonymous said...

please, let's not even mention jj this year!

Anonymous said...

Speaking of last year...Monk, who was the other option for Sunday last year? Do you know if it was really U2?

Anonymous said...

Friday- Jay-Z/Beasties
Saturday - MUSE/Pavement
Sunday - Gorillaz/Thom Yorke

Gorillaz production is massive.....should make for an interesting (or really long) set change.

Anonymous said...

Good dispatch and this enter helped me alot in my college assignement. Thanks you on your information.

Anonymous said...

@devobrain ... while it's true that jay-z hasn't sold out his latest show at staples center, i think the reason is because he's pretty consistently played los angeles for the last two or three years. i saw him recently at the holywood bowl, so i'm not the most excited to see him at coachella. but for much of the coachella crowd, an addition like jay z is a stellar pick because his ticket prices are steep and many fans of "coachella" music (if there is such a thing) may not want to shell out the money to see a top-tier hip-hop act on their own.
if the jay-z rumor is true, coachella has done something great for the fans of their festival because he is a rap star like no other.

Anonymous said...

Jay Z was fine as a replacement last year at APW but that's it, he was just fine. I'm sorry but putting hip hop at the top of Saturday night just doesn't seem right. Coachella is not a hip hop crowd, we tolerate it sprinkled here and there but please no more.

Now if his guest is Bowie...it's all cool then. Peace out.

Unknown said...

Well , it looks like i will be dance'n in the Sahara during Jay Z set . Just like last year during Killers . Fine with me !!!

martin said...

WE NEED BIG SAHARA ACTS!

Unknown said...

I am reaaaalllly hoping that you are only 60% correct.

Anonymous said...

Sam - you are an idiot is you can't respect the power of Muse. they are perfect as a headliner, amazing live (I hope you've actually seen them if you're making these judgments, but I'm guessing you haven't), heavy on the drama in their sound, & have many many good songs. "Knights of Cydonia" to close will be nothing short of EPIC!

@ anon 7:06pm - if you're trying to say the Gorillaz will not be a good headliner, you are also an idiot. wait 'til the baseline drops in "D.A.R.E." and a full-on dance party erupts throughout the crowd. that set will be pure fun & oh so very sick.

I'm not the biggest hip hop guy so I'm not super stoked on Jay-Z, but I'm optimistic & still think if any hip hop act could hold down a headlining spot, it would be Jay. can't wait to grind on my girl when "Big Pimpin'" drops...haha!

all 3 of those guys are much more exciting that the Cure or many other past headliners. I'll take a hot, more modern act over some random dinosaur band reunion any day! just my $.02 anywho.

Sam said...

I've heard they're amazing live, and that's why I'm not completely disappointed. I'm just not a huge fan of their music, I'm sorry.

Anonymous said...

I was talking to some Golden Voice promoters the other night and they were saying that Tiesto and Benny Benassi have confirmed. IDK I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

martin said...

hhmmm.... well "the dinosaur act" of Roger Waters, probably was the best act ever seen in coachella.

One thing is that your maybe not a fan of the band, other thing is sayin that they suck, or maybe ur just an idiot that doesnt know anything of the history of music.

Anonymous said...

Yeah Roger Waters and Prince were two of the best shows I have ever seen. I love dancing in the sahara but I want rock and roll on the main stage!

Anonymous said...

Problem with Jay Z is anyone can see him around the country at their arena. His show isn't all that expensive either. You can still buy tickets to his Staples Center show in LA for 38.50. Unlike say...Paul McCartney, Prince, Madonna, Roger Waters ..etc, etc.

He was also the last headliner at GV's last event, All Points West..So you can't fault people for thinking they are getting second helpings here. Get ready for some backlash.. Just sayin...

Anonymous said...

^^^^^^
exactly. the people on the coachella message board are in denial about this but there WILL be some pissed off people.

that's why im glad its going to be the w**** s****** instead of
jay z ;)

Anonymous said...

So is the lineup coming out for sure sometime tomorrow morning monk?

Anonymous said...

Jay-Z is simply not an original idea any more. Been done already at APW and Glastonbury.

martin said...

MASSIVE ATTACK!
that will make a pretty good sub-headliner, for any day.

Anonymous said...

Did some quick analysis of your predictions from last year.

You predicted 66 bands last year. Of these predictions 54 were correct with 13 being in the top three lines for every day. 82% of your guesses were correct.

Of the 18% you were incorrect on notables were Neil Young and Kings of Leon.

Of the 80 bands you did not include on your list 9 were in the top three lines including 2 of the headliners The Cure and Paul McCartney.

You were successful in predicting 40% of the lineup and 60% of the top three lines.

martin said...

Last time she put all guaranted and guesses...

Now she is putting only guaranted acts

Anonymous said...

Jay Z is the "surprise"...over Beasties..may not even be on poster..at least the first one

CHUCHO said...

Monk, do you have anything to say about the Underworld rumors posted in COS? Have u heard anything regarding them?

Anonymous said...

Muse is a weak headline. Period. They have a good showbut it is sooooooo over the top, appreciated by teens who like Twilight. After the lights are gone you just ask yourself WTF they are talking about and how you already saw that a gazillion times. And they just toured with U2 and aren't big enough for US. Sorry, get them back to UK, we could have MUCH BETTER bands to play in that set...

Harry said...

@ anon1229 I believe monklish called The Cure a couple weeks before the lineup dropped.

It does bother me that it's the bigger acts monklish was wrong about.

Sam said...

Monklish did also say McCartney in the comments before the lineup was out.

Dr. Disco said...

She called The Cure early. Look for the I love cats post followed by, "Ive said nothing." She will be close to 90% I am betting

Anonymous said...

How Soon Is Now? Is that a hint to a secret headliner???

Anonymous said...

OMG THE SMITHS!!

Anonymous said...

Everybody knows The Smiths aren't playing so stop with over analyzing everything.

i dont get why people gotta hate on MUSE. they were good way before twilight used a song on their sound track, so you cant say its just twilight kids that like them. theyre a great act to see; theyre all amazing musicians and their music is going to sound lovely in the fields. get over it.

Anonymous said...

I saw Muse at the Wiltern a while back and there problem is they play the rock star role way too much. All the fills at the end of every song was overkill!

Anonymous said...

Anyway, I can't believe Perry Farrell is playing, I never get to see that guy live, much less at Coachella.

Dr. Disco said...

When oh when is it gonna drop? A leak should come before midnight pacific shouldn't it?

Anonymous said...

Muse are a thoroughly mediocre band that is being built up by an industry that is desperate for a next generation of headliners...just like Kings of Leon and the Killers.

Dr. Disco said...

I agree with you when you say the Killers are built up as a next generation headliner 100%, and about 50% about Muse, but have you listened to KOL, they are a solid RnR band. Are there better bands out there that haven't been blown up to stadium status, yes. But thats what makes them so good, they don't give into every persons definition of music.

James said...

@anon751 Couldn't agree more.

Harry said...

Or maybe they really are just big and you're resisting because you don't like it?

Anonymous said...

I really don't understand all the hating on Muse (& other potential Coachella 2010 artists). throwing around words like "thoroughly mediocre" is just ludicrous & ignorant. all you self-righteous, self-proclaimed music critics are effing morons. sure, have an opinion...not every band, dj, or artist is going to be your cup of tea (especially at a festival as eclectic as Coachella) & if making that opinion known on message boards is what you wanna do, then go for it...but criticizing a band for how bad or unskilled or "thoroughly mediocre" you claim they are just makes you sound stupid & lame.

I'm not the president of the Muse fan club by any means, but I do know that the lead singer is a classically trained pianist and a very accomplished musician. or maybe he & his band are just "thoroughly mediocre." probably couldn't compare to the amazing cover band you play guitar in at the local pub...or the random indie band that's gonna blow up so you can tell everyone that you discovered them before anyone else. bunch of faggles on here...

martin said...

agree!...

people are to ignorant... even if you dont like the music, if you do a little research and watch the HAARP DVD on youtube, you can see that they are one of the most amazing bands you can see right now. I dont care what kind of music do you like Muse has great musicians, and its a great pick for Coachella.

popsicill said...

is it midnight yet?

Sam said...

Muse fans: Shut up. People have different opinions than you, and they are allowed to voice them. I don't mind Muse, I'm just not a huge fan and I'm actually optimistic about their performance from what I've heard. Do I think they're a great headliner choice? No. Does that mean I am personally attempting to attack the band and discredit any merit as a musical group they might have? Of course not. Seriously, you're overreacting, calm down. I keep looking forward to new comments, hoping for them to reveal news of the lineup. Instead I'm met with you idiots feverishly trying to defend your group from the slightest criticisms. In short: nobody cares, please stop. Do us all a favor and at the very least, stop until the lineup is released. Then you can continue all you want.

Anonymous said...

Gorillaz, Muse, Beasties, Thom Yorke, Phoenix, TCV, Vamp Weekend (new album is excellent, btw), Dead Weather, Soundgarden, possibly Jay-Z, what more could you want for a perfect desert sky festival with the best crowd in the world?!! Gonna be huge.

Anonymous said...

I got 99 problems but this ain't one!

Anonymous said...

Uhm, yeah, you don't know shit about Coachella. No DJ's and only one hip hop act is not how it's usually done.

Anonymous said...

Uh, actually I do. I've been to all 10, smarty pants. If you think the @11:44 list is comprehensive then you, my friend are the one who is not familiar with all things Coach.

Anonymous said...

And in no way would Monk's list even come close to being comprehensive. Plenty of dj's to be added, and I'm looking forward to it as I had a ball grooving like a banshee to Etienne and Mstrkrft last year. Doesn't Beasties and Jay-Z count as 2 hip hop acts? Thought so. More to be added, don't worry your pretty little head.

Anonymous said...

Database Error

somehipstr said...

these headliners are weak.mus sucks balls.gorillaz are wack.and jay z is blehh..letss get the stones to replace muse.either the strokes or the smiths to replace gorillaz, and gangstarr to replace jay z.thats a thought

Anonymous said...

Who cares that Muses's "lead singer is a classically trained pianist and a very accomplished musician" if the guy writes rubbish lyrics and plays the over the top with lot's of special effects in his show to prove they are better than others? It is like saying that Coldplay show is great only because they have baloons over people! Ballons! They are decent musicians but aren't a special band by any means. So, back off tweehard Muse fans! Get them back to UK.

Anonymous said...

My ass is "classically trained" to take shit.

The good thing about Muse headlining will be able to go to the other shows (assuming they are good - and I am certain they are).

For the record, I'm less than impressed with the total accuracy of your list here.

I think that moving Muse to saturday night maybe precludes a replacement headliner? Thoughts Monklish?

Also, again thank you for keeping me sane and excellent accuracy.

Crombrenner said...

Great job as always Monk. Any thoughts on the lack of Beastie Boys and Soundgarden? Late Saturday add maybe?

Anonymous said...

Anyone who doesn't think Muse constitutes a headliner has no idea what they're in for when they actually have the priviledge of seeing them live. Muse is underappreciated in America. With this line up, Muse one of the top acts to see in 2010!

Craig said...

I think your accuracy is pretty amazing. Great job.

MONK - why does Thom Yorke have four questions after his name? any idea? is that the name of his new Goodrich/Flea/Waronker super group? or is it a temporary thing until they actually get a name? or is it a sign that there is an add-on still to come right there (though i thought this one through and figured that there would be a "dot" between Thom Yorke and the questions marks if that were the case)......any ideas??

popsicill said...

@Anon12:26 PM
The dj's on KROQ said that Thom Yorke's solo name is "Thom York ????" It's all just him.

Monklish said...

Each question mark represents a band member of Thom Yorke's unnamed band.

Soundgarden will not be an add. Sorry. I was wrong.

Hold out hope for Beastie Boys. Do not give up on them just yet.

Additional bands should be coming. Not any time soon, but there will be some good surprises, as always.

Monklish, admit right now that you assumed Perry Ferrel would be there and that you based it on nothing.

Monklish said...

@anon400 But of course that was the only reason that I put that. You have not ensnared some clever trap to prove myself as a ruse. I am sure that the one Perry fan will be pleased when he pops up on the final schedule.

Hey monk, do you have any info on the rumor that there will be no single day passes this year?

As always, the undercard is much more impressive than the top end. Beach House, Gossip, XX, The Big Pink, Hadouken!, Camera Obscura, Mew, John Waters, De La Soul, AND PIL, Echo, Specials--Great Lineup, with more to come. I was surprised Bad Liuetenant wasn't on the list, and I do expect Beastie Boys.
