Noel Gallagher/Other Lives split set?

Walter J said...

Who are your headliners at the moment, Monk?
leaning towards? Educated guess?

Anonymous said...

monk..this is very disappointing :(

Monklish said...

This depends on what is disappointing you. You should tell everyone to leak better information or ask Coachella to book a better lineup.

Monklish said...

@4:11pm You are too quick.

Monklish said...

@Walter J My educated guess is it will be acts with albums to promote (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Bjork) more than those that don't have an album out, yet (No Doubt, Daft Punk).

Any word on Queens of the stone age or Sigur Ros?

As far as headlining goes, I'm grateful for Radiohead. What about bands like Yeasayer, Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes.

The 2012 Primavera Sound festival has added the xx, Death Cab for Cutie, Beach House, Wilco, Washed Out, Spiritualized, Explosions in the Sky, the Walkmen, the Dirty Three, Archers of Loaf, the Drums, Godflesh, the Olivia Tremor Control, Shellac, and many more acts to its lineup. The acts will join a previously announced lineup that includes Björk, Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum, Guided by Voices, Yo La Tengo, the reunited Codeine, Neon Indian, and more.
There's a good possibility some of these acts will be at Coachella.

Coachella really needs to pull out all the stops to make the two-weekend thing a success. A LOT is riding on this, and for that, there won't be as many repeating headliners (maybe one, and probably Radiohead). So from a business standpoint, there is only one other band who will be touring next year that can guarantee a large draw both weekends (and who has not played Coachella before). Girls and boys, I give you one of the non-repeat headliners for 2012: The Rolling Stones. And I'm not even a Stones fan, but they do make the most business sense. And probably will be there.

Anonymous said...

The bankable headliners to ensure a sellout of both weekends:

Coldplay
Rolling Stones
Radiohead

Think "business" not "want."

Anonymous said...

Radiohead is a big enough headliner to sell out two weekends.
Coachella will sell out regardless. Look at the expected lineup. They don't "need" The Rolling Stones as a business tactic to sell out. Although it would be incredible and I hope!

Anonymous said...

It's Radiohead-Bjork-Coldplay. If you don't think this will sell tickets, you are a fool.

Anonymous said...

Are the Rolling Stones even touring next year? Everything I'm reading says they aren't.

Anonymous said...

So how disappointed is everyone going to be if it isn't Radiohead?

Anonymous said...

so damn fucking disappointing.

Anonymous said...

aphex twin has to be there

Anonymous said...

monk, do you think aphex twin will play?

Anonymous said...

Rolling Stones make business sense? How does GV burning a shitload of thier budget on one artist make business sense? The number thrown around in the past was 5 million, I cant even imagine the 2 weekend figure.

Lets be real people, Radiohead is the only "get" that headline this year. Artists like Daft, The Stones, The Wall, etc don't really make sense with the whole two weekend setup. Those groups are either too expensive for that to happen or value their rarity too much. Even with Radiohead on a huge tour that will double both as the KoL tour and a tour for new material I would have counted them out if their tour dates didn't essentially lock them in.

No one has any idea on the headliners besides Radiohead. Monk has no idea, hence the lack of headliners going into December. Boardies are claiming Bjork but other than the fact she has no LA residency date shes a total toss up. Its going to be two from the group of No Doubt, Coldplay, RHCP and the Foo. It sucks but it's reality. Coachella doesnt need special acts to sell out anymore and it'd be much easier to get Colplay and the RHCP to play back to back weekends vs some special act like Waters or Daft. Here's to a good undercard because the days of the legit headliner are dead.

coachella friend said...

^ i would agree except all the headliners were legit last year. i too wanted to hate on kings of leon just like everyone else but come showtime i checked them out and they actually put on an amazing show. Caleb has a very unique voice for live shows. Also Kanye West wasnt a douche during his show like everyone thought.. and Arcade Fire.. well everyone knew they would be amazing. i still have faith in coachella to produce good headliners. heres to the possibility of RogerWaters/DaftPunk/Radiohead for 2012

Anonymous said...

Kanye blew his load too early with an impressive start and a forgettable rest. Squandered potential for guests and not even a live band. Why? Miss Narcissism wanted it to be all about him. And if you didn't want to watch Kanye and weren't a raver, you had no other options that night.

Anonymous said...

KoL was a festival also-ran, and I've heard the show was decent but nothing special. That's not the issue here, the real point is that they were nothing special as a booking. Arcade Fire put on an unreal show, but they were in the same boat having played a handful of other festivals the previous year. Kanye was the real get but a lot of people hate him, thus detracting from him being a real "wow" headliner. (Personally I love him and thought that set was amazing). Its not a knock on the quality of the performance it has more to do with how rare/unique the booking is. That was what made Coachella so special in the past. I hate Bjork but she would be a pretty legit get for Coachella because she rarely plays the US. Obviously the Stones and Waters play all over but they are rock gods and their presence at a festival is unique in unto itself. And I don't even need to go into how epic getting the robots back on the fields would be. There just isnt a large variety of headliners when you factor in who is available each year. Coachella has reached a certain popularity just as a name brand that GV doesn't have to waste the time or resources to go out of their way and to fight and claw for a new Daft tour or to fit the Wall to the main stage when Coldplay is starting their tour and will sell ticket just as easily. It really just comes down to how popular Coachella has become in its own right and as long as GV books acts that are at least popular currently they can be successful without the rare names now, a luxury that wasn't the case in the past.

Anonymous said...

yeezy was so sick last year i wish he would come back but maybe weezy or chingy>?

Anonymous said...

@1:41 You are sooooooo right. Coachella use to fight and claw to get headliners and undercard acts that no other festival would get. Now they settle for KOL, The KILLERS, Strokes, Etc. It has become they will get any popular act just to sell tickets, which is one of the main reasons my 6 year love affair with Coachella is over. While 2011 was an improvement on 2010 (B.A.D. , Suede, Kills, etc.) it is already looking weak for this year with the typical Radiohead, Bjork, RHCP, etc. So long Coachella is use to be fun. Time to turn it over...

Anonymous said...

^^^ Roger Waters is playing the coloseum within a few weeks of Coachell - why would he play ?

Coachella will sell out no matter who headlines. They will become like Glastonbury where the tickets sell out before they announce a lineup.
