Walter J, you seem like you're a nice chap and are definitely trying to contribute and may even have the ins. However, you gotta get a blogger account man. It's not making any sense for you to keep showing up and saying "this guy isn't me, but here's what I have." It's turning into a headache. Get an account and you'll get a grip of followers from this and we'll know when it's actually you. On that note, thanks for giving us some info to let us play with. It's getting fun already.

Anonymous said...

Will justice be playing at the mainstage like then Chem bros did?

Walter J said...

Anon 10:17

I believe it'd be hard for my sources to determine the specifics concerning their placement this early.

Although, if the production quality is close to the Chems last year the amount of draw they have would be enough to warrant a main stage placement.

If i were to guess, I'd say they get a main stage closing spot.

Anonymous said...

Would Costello be on the subheadliner line? Or a third or fourth liner?

Anonymous said...

Elvis Costello most likely wouldn't be a subheadliner. If they do the poster like they did last year though he would probably be on the second line, kind of like PJ Harvey. If they do their typical two bands on the second line than he'd likely be on the third line like Paul Weller or Leonard Cohen in 2009.

Anonymous said...

Tune-yards and james blake are trendy crap.

Anonymous said...

Walter J, if you are making all this shit up I will be so bummed...so much that I want to see, and then I sit back and realize that most of it is undercard...so many subheadliners, third and fourth lines to come still, and also some significant Sahara names.

Blogs already lack credibility, glad to see comments on said blog, from a random poster, who cannot be traced, are taken as fact.

Anonymous said...

Justice is noted for having a pretty minimal stage production, certainly nowhere NEAR the Chems. Other DJs have closed the mainstage (like Tiesto twice) but he's bigger than Justice. Justice having 1 album and a smaller production probably means they won't close the mainstage. I don't really see any DJs on the horizon that will. (PS...don't get your hopes high for Outkast, not happening)

Anonymous said...

Deadmau5 could easily close the main stage, sadly.

Anonymous said...

Of course Walter J is making this shit up.

Anonymous said...

527, I agree. In fact if Deadmau5 hadn't played Coachella so recently (2010) I would almost guarantee he does. I can't really think of another DJ who could close the main stage for the first time (outside Daft Punk of course).

Walter J said...

I was just guessing, no evidence to steer my statement towards fact.

But deadmau5's currently does have something that could easily be utilized on the main stage.
To be fair we have no idea if Justice might be working on a new elaborate stage set up to go with their new album/tour....remember deadmau5's stage production prior to Coachella 2010 was nothing to lose one's shit over.

the pied piper said...

Beach House anyone?
Coldplay < Radiohead
I can't stress this enough.

Anonymous said...

Can anybody enlighten me as to what Walter J has said that gives him such widespread credibility? I want him to be right more than anybody, but he's not. Radiohead as a fallback plan to Beasties and No Doubt? No trace of dubstep in the Sahara? He's just a very clever music fan who is listing a convincing mix of genres for Coachella (including posting many acts right after they are posted as wishlist items on the Coachella boards), but it doesn't add up. Sorry guys.

@7:26: word. I feel like he doesn't have his own blog so he can just disappear if he turns out to be wrong so he doesn't have to take the heat for his info. At least Monklish isn't a coward about it.

Walter J said...

Anon @7:26 & 11:26

First and foremost, I dont visit the Coachella message boards.

If you feel like discrediting my intel because some of it coincides with some people's wishlist or educated guesses then by all means do so.

We'll see once the lineup is unveiled come January who in fact was in the know.

Concerning starting my own blog or google account as I've stated I prever contributing in this manner to protect myself and as well as my sources...I'm not here for notoriety or accolades...I'm just a Coachella goer with a bit of info willing to share if that doesn't suffice your standards I'm not here to convert you...

Anonymous said...

I think if Walter were legit he wouldn't be so defensive about things. He could just let his accuracy speak for him whenever the lineup does come out. I happen to know some of his "confirmations" are, in fact, incorrect. People with real information don't leak it.

Anonymous said...

Let the numbers speak for themselves when in fact the lineup drops.

I'm not defending Walter J but we are too far removed from an actual official line up to know for sure if in fact his intel is bs or truth. I think we should all take any info from whomever with a grain of salt or just ignore his posts.

Anonymous said...

Honestly, if Walter J is real, then the lineup looks to be amazing. If he is a fake, to so what. The guy is doing a great job at getting me stoked about the festival again after the whole 'two weekend Goldenvoice money grabbing sceme.' A lot of the artists he has mentioned WILL be there, if you think logically about things. So honestly, just have some fun with things and don't be so uptight.

Neutral Milk Hotel? Try doing a little research before throwing down a hoax list with a pipe dream like NMH. For the record, Jeff Mangum will be solo touring in the first half of 2012:

GUYS. DAvid Bowie has NOT even HINTED that he is going out to do a tour AT ALL. it is not happening. he is not like Prince in that he will just come over here to the the west side and play for money. The dude has plenty of that. he would have to WANT to do it and at his age and with his health the last few years? he is not going to come over here for ONE show. GET IT OUT OF YOUR HEADS. I have worked for him before, he is not that guy to just do it for the cash grab.

The earlier we all realize that Daft Punk, Outkast, and Bowie aren't doing it and begrudginly accept that Coldplay is pretty much a lock, the easier it will be to swallow when the lineup comes out.

Anonymous said...

At least The Black Keys won't be back to bore up the place until 2013.

Stone said...

First of all, Oasis? Sucks. Haa. Maybe it's just me. I like maybe two of their songs. I know, I know. Everyone likes them. I have seen there name on this blog too much!

Some of u keep saying Stones, BUT, I just do not think that there is going to be a Stones tour next year at all, so therefore I do not expect them at Coachella. There just has not been enough chatter, except from all of us that would love to see the Stones do Coachella, to believe that it is going to happen. They are old and live overseas, so they aint gonna come over for ONE show.

Bowie? Well shit..I want it. WE ALL WANT IT. But again, with the health issues that I hear he has and again the lack of evidence of a new album or tour - I just don't see it. I see it when I get high and listen to Space Oddity, oh yeah, I see THAT, but I don't see us getting him in Indio.

I stand by the findings thus far, as Radiohead just released their latest and there is talk that it is in fact the first half to a double album and the 2nd one will be out before the tour that will start at Coachella. Coldplay is a lock, they just are. I promise you. And those two alone, are the largest acts from GB that we can import, other than U2 (who I just don't see doing it) and the aforementioned Stones.

I think Foo makes sense, as they are just a hugely current band that is doing a victory lap for sureI did hear that Grohl swore to never do Chella again... Dying to know why...

I think it's a mistake for us to expect a larger than normal list of headliners, as they just seem to be shying away from that. We all thought they were going to go extra big for the 10th anniversary and they did not. We all thought they HAD to go big to modify it to two weekends, but that's just not true anymore. I hear they are more than 2/3 sold out for BOTH wknds and that took place WITHOUT a lineup!!! INSANITY, right?

Coachella is no longer about the headliners, or even the line-up it seems. It is a damn vacation destination. Like Memorial Day in Vegas or 4th Of July at Lake Havasu or New Year's Eve in NYC...people just want to be there no matter what now. People are going for all other kinds of reasons (daytime sponsored pool parties, getting that hot profile pic by the pool at the condo you rented, reshooting Mac & Me by the solar windmills).

They have not even had a crazy headliner in a long time really. This year alone they booked people that were and are very over exposed and just currently "on fire" (Kanye, Kings Of Douche and Arcade Fire). You can almost grab two of Lollapolooza's headliners any August and those two artists will surely be at Coachella the next spring. The idea that they are going after these insane headliner "gets" anymore isn't really true anymore. The last time they really got someone that doesn't usually do fests was Prince in 08 and they dusted off Rage in 07 for that amazing reunion. But other than that? It really always is people that are currently hot and on tour (See Beasties and RHCP in 03, Radiohead in 04, Coldplay and NIN in 05, Tool in 06, RHCP and Bjork in 07, Jack Johnson in 08, Killers in '09, Muse and Jay-Z in '10)...only three times have they gone crazy 80s dust-off (The Cure twice and Depeche once) and only twice have they given us classic icons in the space (Sir Paul in 09 and Roger Waters in 08). I guess Gorillaz was an out of nowhere "get" kind of...er, maybe?

So it makes sense that three HUGE bands that are on tour around then (Foo, Cold and Radio) would be the headliners. I would not expect Talking Heads (unfortunately), Outkast, Bowie, Stones, Eminem (his tour footage has been NOwhere near as good as Kanye's btw), Dr. Dre, Daft Punk and definitely no Velvet Underground.

Simply put? They do not need to spend big anymore, the audience is there and ready and they would go if the headliners were Lady Gaga, Incubus and Kid n Play...and for all we know at this point, that's exactly who it is..

Anonymous said...

I don't think GV has intentionally strayed away from booking "gets" for headliners. Although I also tend to be cynical about profitability trumping art, Paul Tollett has proven that he IS focused on providing the best possible experience and curates the festival very intensely as opposed to just throwing shit at the wall (Lollapalooza).

That being said, a festival can only book the artists that a) want to play, and b) are available to play. For the undercard that's not problem, there are literally hundreds of amazing acts that would jump at the chance to play. But when you consider how many acts are realistically big enough to headline, it really probably narrows down to 20-30 at any given time, many of which do not have new material or a tour production ready to go. Not only that, but there is no "formula"...it used to look like there HAD to be a classic rock act, then like there HAD to be a hip-hop act...I'm willing to bet next year will have neither. They really just book the best acts they can.

I remember when they announced KOL/Kanye/Arcade Fire last year (cause who really counted The Strokes as a headliner) and everybody was incredibly disappointed...but then no other festival had a strong set of headliners either. There were just not many headliner quality acts that were ready to tour so they took what they could get.

Now if GV could book Bowie, Daft Punk, Radiohead and OutKast in one Coachella they would jump at the chance. But part of what has given these acts their "legendary" status is their scarcity in the first place. The chances that any of these fictional dream headliners would be available for a Coachella performance is a stretch.

That being said, Radiohead is looking very, very good for next year (and they are by far my least favorite of the "mythical" headliners, so this isn't really wishful thinking). I'd almost be willing to say Radiohead and Coldplay are locks. Throw in a readily available but less big act (Foo Fighters, Beastie Boys, My Morning Jacket) and you have your headliners for next year, guaranteed. Let's not blow our expectations, the undercard is always where it's at anyway.

Anonymous said...

Luis Garcia said...

Nine Inch Nails are booked.

Anonymous said...

@anon 102...almost all of your information is incorrect. First off, the last big get they had was in 08? Ummm, do you remember them getting a BEATLE in 09? Someone who's never done an American festival before? Yeah, that's Paul McCartney. What other festivals did Gorillaz headline before Coachella? What festivals did Roger Waters do? Also the first festival Kanye headlined was Coachella. So they do still get "gets".

Nobody has mentioned Oasis but you. Anybody who thinks Oasis is a proven moron. The bandmates are SUING EACH OTHER now. they are not going to tour probably ever, and if they do it's not going to be within the next 5 years.

The King of Limbs is not a 2 part album. That was wishful thinking. We've got the 12 songs that were recorded during that session now so you really are out of the loop on that one.

And Radiohead says they have no definitive tour plans, and Coachella has said they already signed the headliners, so really Radiohead isn't a lock. I don't expect them actually. But I do agree that Coldplay is a lock.

And please dear god do not have Foo Fighters headline one day. Please I beg you.

Anonymous said...

Coachella could easily be a one off for Radiohead.

Anonymous said...

Radiohead is a lock. They will sell out the remainder of the tickets in hours, no one else would. Most people that are interested in going to Coachella already have their tickets.

No Adele???? Hard to believe tha lineup with no Adele and no Huuuge reunion

Anonymous said...

Neutral Milk Hotel isn't a huge reunion? Also, Outkast could be one of the hip hop artists that that post is leaving out

Walter J said...

Walter J @11:50

False

Anonymous said...

That duplicate lineup is WAY too stacked. Not happening

Anonymous said...

Walter J, it would make life for all of us much easier if you would just make a Google account.

Anonymous said...

It's not a Neutral Milk Hotel reunion, it's just Jeff.

Any lineup that doesn't include TOOL is inaccurate.

LIttle Birdy said...

Bjork
RHCP
Tool

yup...

Anonymous said...

TOOL doesn't even have a new album and there is no way they are going to have RHCP there for the 3rd time when there are headliners like Pearl Jam and Foo and Outkast and tons others that haven't done it yet.....also if they did get either Bjork or RHCP. They would not get both, they would get one or that would be a complete repeat of two headliners from 2007!!!!!! They woud not be that lame and repeat 2/3 of a headliner lineup....they just wouldn't .....especially for the year they go to two in one wknd

Anonymous said...

NMH is releasing a box set and Jeff is touring right now. It's not out of the question to think that Coachella could get them for 12. Fuck another Bjork, RHCP, or Tool performance.

Anonymous said...

Bjork, RHCP, and Tool would sell out both weekends easily...

Walter J said...

What's a google?

Walter J said...

Walter J with a google account @ 6:18

Just another imposter, pay no mind to any of his input.

I have stated that I wouldn't make a google account nor do I plan to do so.

This person just jumped the gun and created one so people will listen.

Thread carefully.

Goldenvoice is obviously trending towards more contemporary artists see: Jay-Z, Muse, Gorillaz/Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, Kanye West, The Strokes. It's not going to be Tool or Bjork.

Walter J said...

My input is summarized well in this video.

Anonymous said...

@Anon1041 in 2009 you'd have said GV is "trending" towards older acts. they had Prince/Roger Waters/Paul McCartney/Morrissey. They don't trend towards anything. They get the best available lineup without being too repetitive.

@Anon821 I'd be down for Tool but logistically it makes no sense. APC makes more sense than Tool.

Anonymous said...

contd from above
@WalterJ 12:26 that's perfect. couldn't say it better myself.

Anonymous said...

@ Anon 9:34 Tool has a new album out in May. Just saying.

Also, word on my well connected block is the TOOL rumors are true. If what I'm hearing is true the headliners are:

Bjork
Radiohead
TOOL

Anonymous said...

2 3rd time headliners in one year? not happening. Plus, Tool's new album has been "coming out" for 2 years now.

Walter J said...

Back with an update, and it's a big one
8/31/11

Boris
Erasure
Eric Prydz
Feist
Florence & the Machine
Fucked Up
Hum
Pulp
Raconteurs
Skrillex
Wye Oak

Anonymous said...

@walter j
ummm skrillex?. . .again?

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't be surprised if Skrillex was booked again.

Anonymous said...

whats the whole hype about Pulp anyways? their not that great.

Anonymous said...

lol to Skrillex playing again

Walter J said...

Walter J @1:15 is an imposter.

I will have an update for sure tommorow though.
ditto bout Skrillex.

Anonymous said...

@6:03, their reunion tour shows have been universally acclaimed as fantastic. After the shameful crowds at Faith No More and Pavement, I doubt we will ever get a reunion of that caliber again; maybe the occasional budget reunion that nobody really asked for in the first place.

Anonymous said...

Maynard rumored to perform twice each weekend.

APC as a sub on Friday & Tool headlining Sunday.

Anonymous said...

OFWGKTA, Lady Gaga, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Spoon, Beirut, Postal Service, Modest Mouse, Lupe Fiasco, K'naan, Jay Z

Anonymous said...

Having Tool and A Perfect Circle would definitely sell a ton of tickets. Maynard fanboys are crazy like that.

Ryan Hawezzz said...

Tool fanboys are almost as bad as Rage fanboys....vomit!..Fuck this presumption of a 2006/2007 rehash.

As Goldenvoice has demonstrated, they are moving towards creating new headliners from a contemporary standpoint. Fuck this Bjork, RHCP, Tool noise.

Foo Fighters, My Morning Jacket, Coldplay seem like logical safe bets...and I'm sure we'll get one of the following as a headliner.....the other two? Well lets just say that as a whole the entire trending thought process will be seriously upset.

Expect a lot of the obvious and expect to be surprised simultaneously.

Anonymous said...

Ryan Hawezzzz, there is no formula. They book the best available headliners. No "formula" (there has to be a classic rock headliner, there has to be a rapper, there has to be a up and coming band) ever lasts for more than 2 years. Plus Paul Tollett has already stated in the Desert Sun article that this year's headliners do not skew young like 2011's did, and that they don't skew young like 2008's. This likely means very established bands that are not yet "classic rock" status, and while I don't think Tool or Bjork will be there, those fit into his clues nicely.

Anonymous said...

Eminem/Beasties
Radiohead
TOOL

It's happening.

Anonymous said...

There's nothing "logical" about My Morning Jacket headlining. Get over it.

Anonymous said...

"But they headlined Sasquatch!"

So did Ween and Massive Attack. They're not headliners either.

Anonymous said...

i know how you get your sources!
shame on you Walter j

Anonymous said...

Now we know why Walter J didn't make an account...so when he makes mistakes he can go back and say "oh that wasn't me." I think people were pretty much over him to begin with and that's the nail on the coffin. You had a good run there though man.

Walter J said...

Sorry if my reasoning for not opening a google account doesn't satisfy you but anyway...

As promised here is an update.
9/1/11

Armin Van Buuren
Avicii
Bag Raiders
Das Racist
Discordian Society
Frankie and The Heartstrings
Girls
Girl Unit
Grizzly Bear
Plastilina Mosh
Shabazz Palaces
Soda Stereo
Starslinger
Wild Beasts

thanks for the patience amidst all the imposters and doubters

Anonymous said...

Remember when Walter J said No Doubt was headlining until all of us were like "No dude, that's just dumb, nobody wants to see No Doubt" and he defended it for a while until he realized nobody would believe it and then he said Radiohead was chosen to replace them? Yeah, that should have discredited him from the beginning. Anyone was still believing him is gullable.

Anonymous said...

Wtf Monk?

a friend said...

RHCP are booked...but don't worry kids, so is the Knife and I foresee a very fortunate conflict that night :)

Yes:

Radiohead
TOOL
Lil Wayne
MMJ
Wild Flag

Anonymous said...

Monk! Ou est vous?
Please start a new post.

Anonymous said...

There's no way this much of the lineup is booked this far in advance. You're all so completely gullible.

Anonymous said...

^ With this being a two weekend affair this year, I am sure bands are excited to book early. This is TONS of exposure for up and commers. I am sure GV is holding a few spots at each level for "hot" bands as we approach April, but I am sure that by this point, 60-70% of the talent is booked. GV even said the headliners are cemented already, so why not get everyone else? You sir are the idiot.

Anonymous said...

Walter J, didn't you say Coldplay, Outkast, Beasties, and Radiohead were headlining? Is this still the case?

Anonymous said...

Outkast is absolutely not playing. Sorry, folks.

Anonymous said...

@Anon 8:17:

I don't think you understand how Coachella booking works. The headliners have already been booked for months straight out of Paul Tollett's mouth. In fact, headliners are sometimes booked a year in advance...Arcade Fire was booked for 2011 before 2010 even ended.

Next they work on the undercard. By this point, all headliners, undercard, and major reunions are at least booked or in the final stages of negotiation. Acts base their whole touring schedule off of major festivals.

Walter J is still pulling things out of his ass, but if 75% or more of the lineup is already booked I wouldn't bat an eyelash.

Anonymous said...

If the headliners are already booked, then does that mean they are all good? I imagine acts like Foo Fighters, Coldplay, and RHCP would be backup options if they can't get someone better?

Walter J said...

Re:
anon @9:39 yes, as far as I'm concerned.

anon @10:59 I'm in agreeance minus the part about making up all the acts I've contributed as confirmations.

I, however will be willing to admit in the case that my source has provided me with inncurate information.

Anonymous said...

Any list that doesn't contain Garbage is incomplete.

Ripley said...

All three headliners will be third time headliners.

Anonymous said...

In the Desert Sun article Tollett says he expects to have the lineup complete by the end of September, so it's not out of the question that 75% of bands are already booked.

Anonymous said...

Headliners:

TOOL
Lady Gaga
Radiohead

Anonymous said...

outkast, madlib, the wailers, pete rock vs. dj premier, fatboy slim, beats antique, cotton jones, shabazz palaces, the roots, doom

Anonymous said...

so, whats the word on the street Walter j?

Walter J lies. How can Soda Stereo be already booked if their lead singer and guitarist is in coma?. That's messed up.

Radiohead-Coldplay-Beastie Boys

Foo Fighters-RHCP-Bjork-The Flaming Lips-TV on the Radio-Bon Iver-Fleet Foxes- will all probably be there...

I would freak out if The Knife, Justice, or How to Destroy Angels are on the roster.

Also Underworld, Massive Attack, or Aphex Twin would be nice;)
