good stuff Monk

Anonymous said...

Fuck yes

Anonymous said...

Anyone else intruiged by the absence of the "obvious" bands? By that i mean florence, tv on the radio, fleet foxes, etc. Maybe Goldenvoice has some surprises. Then again, these are just rumors.

Anonymous said...

I guess I'll start off by asking about RADIOHEAD???

Anonymous said...

Kings of Convenience FTW!

Anonymous said...

Thanks monk, you make us all happy <3

Anonymous said...

I'm very UNhappy

Anonymous said...

PULP!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

pulp is alright

Coachella Vet said...

hey monk is there any chance Queens of the Stone Age are there this year? they just wrapped up their first album tour that GV produced and they say they are going to tour their second album (Rated R) next year. I saw them 2 times on their last tour and would love to see them again next year... please tell me there's a chance.

Anonymous said...

I believe this is not the first year Pulp was predicted.

Outside of Pulp, no surprises here really.

Anonymous said...

can u please elaborate on pulp?

Anonymous said...

Sonic Youth will play their final show at Coachella II, making it infinitely more aggravating to have Coachella I passes.

Anonymous said...

monk, how often will you be updating?
I know that you have more bands that have been booked. Can you confirm is Radiohead is going or not?

Anonymous said...

STFU about radiohead already you fags. It's October.

Anonymous said...

^ stop complaining you fuck.

Anonymous said...

who else wishes radiohead had played like 4 years ago when people really gave a shit and before they dropped that meh album?

on a side note anyone else notice we get a Illuminate slave every year since 09' Paul McCartney, Jay-z and Kanye West. who will it be this year monk?

Anonymous said...

^ you mean illuminati right?
Yeah well if Daft Punk goes, there's one illuminati slave(s).

Anonymous said...

yeah i meant illuminati. ive heard rihanna might be this years slave. i hope not though cause i like the other slaves better

Anonymous said...

what da fuck. I highly doubt rihanna will be playing. Although she did "beg" GV for her to perform next year. If anything, the closest thing for a illuminati slave to headline it would be RHCP. I highly doubt that one too though.

Anonymous said...

Wow, after we bounced back with that last thread, this one immediately goes to shit. nice job guys. I'm going to go cry in a corner

Anonymous said...

^stfu

So Monklish basically ripped off Walter J's first predictions.....Long Live Walter J!

Anonymous said...

Did Walter J ever list Pulp or was that just the imposters?

Anonymous said...

I dont think he mentioned Pulp

Anonymous said...

^how true could this sonic youth claim be? that would be bullshit if they only played the second weekend.

Anonymous said...

so whats up monk?

L.A. Jay said...

I'm also hearing Rihanna..

Anonymous said...

if Rihanna plays then there will be 10 people watching her and she will cry

Anonymous said...

i feel like if she really wanted to play she could play some early evening slot and it wouldn't be that big of deal.

Anonymous said...

you guys are crazy, Rhianna would pack the main stage.

Anonymous said...

^ lol

Anonymous said...

If Rhianna would pack the mainstage then the allure of Coachella truly is dead. I think she would have a crowd of about 5-6 thousand tops

Anonymous said...

I bet she'll have more people than Jack Johnson did.

Anonymous said...

i think you underestimate how big the crowd would be. Depends totally on when she was playing. A top slot, yea shed have an empty stage. if they gave her an evening slot and the sahara wasnt popping off she could easily be one of those bands that gets a pretty big crowd.

Everyone who goes to coachella knows that there is always some big name you see at first and think "I will never see that person", then when set times come out and theres not anyone really playing agaisnt her its like why not check out what the hype is about. 5000 out of a given 50-60 that are still in the festival at the time she plays is way too low an estimate

Anonymous said...

What about the Stone Roses? Pulp, Blur, and Stone Roses for British invasionchella

Anonymous said...

"Monklish, what about _____??? You neglected to include them but I'm absolutely sure you ment to!"

Stfu you whiny cunts

Anonymous said...

PULP??????!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

If you haven't already heard Radiohead is heading back into the studio this winter to record, and they have also publicly announced a 2012 tour. Having said that we can hope and assume with a bit of confidence that Radiohead will headline Coachella. And for those of you King of Limbs haters out there Radiohead should have a bit of new stuff to play for you. Bring it!

Anonymous 7:49 said...

@3:09 I have absolutely no information whatsoever, proving the fact that believable statemnts by anonymous posters on this or any blog are completely baseless and. Without merit. Thank you for proving the point of everyone who says walter j et al are full of shit.

Anonymous said...

who's radiohead?

Anonymous said...

I'd love a fuck session in the mojave. Fuck Buttons > Fucked Up > Holy Fuck.

Anonymous said...

Why do people have this obsession with Radiohead headlining? It's not like they're some elusive "get"--they play everywhere and it really wouldn't be a big deal. This shit is fucking annoying. Every year it's the same goddamn thing. Are there no other interesting/legitimate choices?

Anonymous said...

^ You are an idiot.
1. They don't play everywhere.
2. They produced the best two albums of the last two decades according to most music critics, Ok Computer in 90s and Kid A in the 00's.
3. When they played Lolla 4 years ago, they were the only band playing during their time slot and guess what, all 70,000 people were there being awed.

Anonymous said...

The bottom of the barrel has been fully scraped with Kings of Leon. Name some viable alternatives so we can laugh, I dare you. Also, Radiohead has only done three small gigs in America since the 2008 tour.

Anonymous said...

I don't know if anonymous 856am is trolling or is just retarded.

Anonymous said...

they should bring back TOOL to headline for the 3rd time

Anonymous said...

the last two years have had hip hop headliners on the bill, any chance that happens again monk? also who are the possibilities?

Anonymous said...

yeah TOOL, Coldplay and Radiohead sound like three good headliners from diverse genres and appeal to many different age groups. Also all three put on amazing shows.

Anonymous said...

Coachella doesn't have a formula when it comes to picking headliners. There will be no hip-hop headliner this year.

Anonymous said...

^how do you know? bet you wouldn't put your money where you mouth is. I mean shit Eminem will probably drop his next album soon and hes never done coachella before and he has done other similar big festivals.

Anonymous said...

i hope they bring justice to the main stage! In the same way they went on after Roger Waters in 09' except on the main stage cause I had trouble even getting into the jam packed sahara tent back in 09' and they are way bigger now.

Anonymous said...

i love justice but that new cd is so meh

that said there has been word of them working with the creators project so a main stage closing seems very likely. Unless AVD totally flops which I could see them closing the sahara in the boys noize slot

Anonymous said...

Justice is def closing maintstage ya'll

Mikey S said...

What are the POSSIBLE headliners that are realistic Monk? NOT what you all WANT people, but are we HONESTLY looking at? U know?

AND PEOPLE, enough! Coachella has the GREATEST vibe ever, can we not have a good vibe on here? Lets stop sh*tting on each other and being rude and name calling, this is supposed to be FUN!

This seems to be the pool we should expect 3 or 4 from? And Monk, do u think it will be 4 headliners like last year or should we stop trying to think there is some formula?

POSSIBLE HEADLINERS:

PROBABLE

Radiohead
Coldplay
Outkast
Foo Fighters
Red hot Chili Peppers
TOOL
No Doubt
Beastie Boys

LESS LIKELY

Daft Punk
Roger Waters doing The Wall

am i missing anyone else?

Anonymous said...

just confirmed Tool is headlining with justice going on after them and closing out the main stage. if you dont like it stfu and gtfo!

Anonymous said...

OMGZZZZ! Thank you, stupid fuck!

Anonymous said...

LOL at Eminem. His new album is garbage and if anything he would have headlined last year or 2010.

Anonymous said...

Remember when you some of you dummies thought Pavement were headliners?

Anonymous said...

in 4 years of going to coachella pavement was the worst full set ive ever seen (except for the 20 minute abomination of die antword). Pavement made pheonix seem like the beatles.

and Mikey S stop being such a pussy. Coachella is coachella and that epic magic that surrounds the festival only lasts for those 4 awesome days of the year. Outside of those days is the hell that is real life which kills all patience for bullshit from fags like walter j and uneducated morons making dumb predictions. If you want to discuss the headliner pool, fine. but dont be such a bitch about it

Radiohead doesn't play everywhere. They haven't played a festival in the US since 2008. They haven't done a show bigger than a small theatre anywhere in the world since 2009 (even their surprise Glastonbury show was small). Stop bitching about Radiohead, they are the #1 band in the world and haven't played Coachella since 2004.

Rihanna isn't headlining Coachella. That's just dumb. I could definitely see her do a Lauren Hill spot or the outdoor theater though.

Also, anon1240 you are a moron.

"Considering the Coachella Valley reaps $35 million from the festival each year, it's likely that some sort of compromise will be reached to get the festival started on-time."

@8:54 AM, have you seen the crowd that attends now? The commitment to EDM is so strong that they have the Sahara, Pure Filth, DoLab, and Heineken stages dedicated to it, plus all the electronic acts on the other stages. Remember Kanye West? The only EDM act that could headline is Daft Punk, or potentially (and this is a stretch) the Chemical Brothers.

There is a big EDM scene at Coachella, but they aren't headlining Deadmau5 or Guetta. They could very easily close the mainstage after a headliner, however.

Anonymous said...

Chem Bros could NEVER headline.

Anonymous said...

Any word on Friendly Fires????

Anonymous said...

Anon @7:55 PM, Yes, I am aware of the EDM/PLUR crowd at Coachella and am not refuting the possibility (or even probability) of either of those acts being at Coachella. My reference to EDC was because it is HIGHLY unlikely that Coachella would book those as HEADLINERS of a very diverse festival.

Rihanna will be at Coachella...in the VIP tent. Seriously she's not playing Coachella in any form. Not only is she the entirely wrong demographic, she is notoriously wooden when she performs "live".

Frankly putting somebody like Rihanna on even the outdoor (like somebody suggested) doesn't make sense and will never happen because even if she was doing a set in the Heineken Dome, the second somebody like Rihanna plays Coachella everybody will cry that they jumped the shark.

If we're getting a pop star this year, it will be Drake or Nicki Minaj.

Anonymous said...

^ factually inaccurate assumption

Anonymous said...

Add The Stone Roses to the list.

They are DEFINITELY playing.

Anonymous said...

So, are the Stone Roses a headliner or subheadliner? I'm guessing first subheadlliner.

ALSO, this is a huge year for reunions then if Pulp and No Doubt end up there as well.

Anonymous said...

As much as I would love for Radiohead to be there, this article makes it seem unlikely:

http://consequenceofsound.net/2011/10/ed-obrien-discusses-radioheads-upcoming-tour/

”Outdoor gigs can be the best gigs, but you’re at the mercy of the elements. It just doesn’t feel right at this time. The record, which has a lot of detail in it, it needs to sonically be in a space where the music is loud, strong, and detailed.” It sounds like those recent duo of dates at New York City’s Roseland Ballroom are a good glimpse of what’s to come.

Totally Weak.

It also says there will be some outdoor gigs. it says the euro shows will be indoors.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

From that interview:
"Although some dates will take place at outdoor venues."

Well look at that! It doesn't say that they won't play any festivals at all. It just that their tour wouldn't be centered around festivals.

Anonymous said...

Coldplay and Blink 182 just released new albums. They might be there... and Linkin Park's new album should be out early 2012. These 3 may not HEADLINE but they may be in the top 5 ...

no one in America knows Pulp though, so I doubt they would play right before a headliner or on the main stage.

And please no Bon Iver on the big stage. He needs to be in a tent.

Anonymous said...

Bon Iver will probably be on main stage as a sub. Or at the least just after sunset on either main or outdoor. I agree his music would sound great in the mojave like Grizzly Bear's did in 2010. I was disappointed the last couple of years when Animal Collective & LCD Soundsystem were on the main & !!! on the outdoor - i wanted a more intimate environment. That being said, I guess since I've been going since 06 the bands I used to love to see in tents will now be on the bigger stages.

Anonymous said...

lol no one in america knows pulp? are you an 18 year old little hipster?

Anonymous said...

^Mid 20's hipster takes a strike at the next generation of douche.

Anonymous said...

@4:55, "no one in America knows Pulp though" should read "no one in America knows Pulp but the musically informed, the band's rabid cult fanbase, and anyone that saw Great Expectations, Trainspotting, or The Venture Brothers."

They may not be on the radar of the average feather-wearing 18 year old that only uses bands for fashion accessories, but you can't get a reunion like Pulp without putting them on the main stage before the headliner. Remember, they were the headliner or subheadliner and on the main stage of every festival they played this year, not just in the UK. Do you think every attendee knew Bauhaus, My Bloody Valentine, or anything by The Verve that isn't "Bittersweet Symphony?" Jarvis Cocker had a big crowd in 2007, too.

P.S. Bon Iver just sold 12,000 tickets in LA, so no tent.

you can't compare The Verve to Pulp in the U.S. The Verve did get a ton of radioplay here and Pulp never did. I love both bands but no way on Pulp being a sub headline. Pulp would not be in a tent. You really think their management would accept such a low billing and payday? In 2007, Jarvis Cocker solo was the first act on the third line and the main stage was scheduled to be inactive during his set. My Bloody Valentine was a subheadliner despite their limited appeal and name recognition, and so was Love & Rockets, and neither came with the baggage of being a bona fide headliner all over Europe.

I hope GV realizes how lame RHCP are now. Seriously does anyone still care at all about anything they do?
coldplay is still a factor in music so i understand but RHCP are washed up and irrelevant. Would be such a waste of a headliner spot and I enjoy their older music.

Am I the only person who thinks were in for a surprise or two for how epic the lineup is? Coachella is popular but its not popular enough to sell out with a bunch of milquetoast bands headlining and sub headlining. I feel like there can only be 2 max of RHCP/No Doubt/Coldplay/Foo Fighters- you have to have a radiohead type act to get people to come out for both weekends

You are in idiot.

Also, I know for a fact Wilco isn't playing...much to my disappointment.

I would say the majority of people who actually like music, love Radioheads newest two albums. I would love to see them just play those two albums in their entirety, plus of course maybe a Idiotecque and I might be wrong encore.
